Dear Friends,
As we celebrate Labor Day weekend, we give thanks to God for the gift of work and for all those whose labor serves our families, our community, and our world.

Work is much more than simply earning a paycheck. Through our work, we participate in God’s ongoing work of creation. From the beginning, God entrusted humanity with the responsibility to cultivate and care for the earth. Whether we work in factories, offices, schools, hospitals, farms, businesses, homes, or in retirement through service and volunteering, our efforts can become a way of serving God and our neighbor.

Jesus Himself understood the dignity of work. Before beginning His public ministry, He spent many years in Nazareth working alongside Saint Joseph. The Son of God chose to experience the ordinary life of labor. Through His hidden years, Jesus sanctified daily work and reminded us that even the simplest tasks can have great value when they are done with love.

Labor Day also invites us to remember those who are struggling. We pray for the unemployed and underemployed, for those seeking work, for workers who face unsafe or unjust conditions, and for families burdened by financial worries. As Catholics, we are called to recognize the dignity of every human person and to work for a society in which people are treated fairly and with respect.

Saint Paul reminds us: β€œWhatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). These words can transform our daily responsibilities. Work can sometimes be tiring, frustrating, and unnoticed. Yet when we offer our efforts to God, even ordinary tasks can become acts of prayer and love.

On this Labor Day, let us also remember the importance of rest. God Himself rested on the seventh day. Rest is not laziness; it is part of God's design for human life. We need time for prayer, family, friendship, and renewal. In a world that often demands constant activity, the Sabbath reminds us that our value does not come only from what we accomplish. We are first and foremost beloved children of God.

As we enjoy this holiday, let us thank God for the gift of meaningful work and for all those whose labor often goes unnoticed. May we respect the dignity of every worker, support those in need, and offer the work of our hands to the Lord.

St. Joseph the Worker, pray for us!

Throughout September the Church honors Our Lady of Sorrows. We are invited to contemplate Mary's deep love and faithfulness amid suffering. By reflecting on her Seven Sorrows, may we find strength in times of trial and grow in compassion for others. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us!
