Greetings children of God.

Our readings this week are Genesis 1:1-2:4a, Psalm 8, 2 Corinthians 13:11-13, and Matthew 28:16-20.

Genesis 1: 1-2, 27-28, 31 – “When God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.” On the 1st day, God created light and he separated the light from the darkness. On the 2nd day, God separated the waters from the sky and the earth. On the 3rd day, God separated the earth from the seas and brought forth vegetation on the earth. On the 4th day, God created the sun, moon, and stars. On the 5th day, God created birds for the sky and living creatures for the sea. On the 1st part of the 6th day, God created living creatures for the land. And on the 7th day, God rested from all the work he had done creating the heavens and the earth. But what happened on the 2nd part of the 6th day? That’s when God created us, “So God created humans in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’ God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.”

We were the last thing God created. Think about that for a moment. In the beginning, there was nothing but darkness and chaos. Each day, God was intentional about what he created. There was a necessity to how he did it. Like building a house or something with Lego’s, you have to have a solid foundation, and that’s what God started with. Then, he methodically added to it each day, creating spaces for various creatures to live and thrive, along with providing for their needs of sustenance. It wasn’t until God completed all of that, that he created humans. Think about what that means? That means we’re here on purpose. We weren’t an accident or collateral damage. God wanted to create us. We were intentionally made. We matter, every one of us matters. That should fill us with a tremendous sense of awe, reverence, and fear. It should also help us to recognize that we aren’t independent, but rather dependent on God for everything. And hopefully these verses help us to see, know, or remember that our being created was very good in the eyes of God. May this be something we all remember when the difficult times come.

Greetings children of God.

Our readings this week are Numbers 11:24-30, Psalm 104:24-34, 35b, Acts 2:1-21, and John 7:37-39.

Numbers 11:24-29 - So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again. However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” Joshua, son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!” But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!”

Just prior to these verses, Moses was the only person the people would go to for counseling or to share their complaints. It was a heavy burden he bore, and he took his frustrations to the Lord. Upon hearing Moses, the Lord told Moses to gather 70 elders, and he would take some of the Spirit that rested on Moses and put it on the 70 elders, so Moses wouldn’t have to bear the burden alone. Surprisingly, the Spirit also rested on Eldad and Medad who remained in the camp, and when they started prophesying, Joshua feared they were trying to assume authority over Moses. But Moses assured Joshua that the Lord had given them his Spirit for good and not bad. Today, the Lord’s Spirit has rested on more than 70 elders, it has rested on all who have been baptized. Spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ isn’t just the responsibility of pastors or priests. It’s the responsibility of all Christians. The number of people that are pastors and priests is small. The number of people that make up their congregations is significantly larger, and they see more people in a day or week than a pastor or priest will. That means they can reach more people than pastors or priests will. It’s a daunting task, to witness to Jesus, but you’re not alone. Just as with Moses and the 70 elders, God has put his Spirit within you to help, guide, and teach you. It’s up to you to trust the Spirit’s lead.

Greetings children of God.

Our readings this week are Acts 1:1-11, Psalm 47, Ephesians 1:15-23, and Luke 24:44-53.

Luke 24:44-52 - He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

This is Luke’s version of the Great Commission. But instead of being told to, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you,” we’re told that we are witnesses of Jesus’ death and resurrection, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations. Both can be intimidating. Fear renders us ill-equipped to be Jesus’ witnesses. But we don’t need to fear as we have received that power from on high in our baptism. It was then that we were filled with the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to go into the world to witness to others the Good News of the crucified and risen Jesus, and the salvation that can only be found in him. It’s a difficult and challenging task, but we are equipped to do it, thanks to the Holy Spirit that our Savior sent to us.

Hopewood Pines is again this year hosting the Ohio Summer Youth Retreat from Sunday June 28 – Wednesday July 1. This is open to all youth that are entering 6th grade through 12th grade. The cost is $150 per youth and registration for this will close by June 12 or when they are full, which may happen sooner. If you would like more information on this, please speak with Pastor Tim. If you would like to register your child or children for this, please see Pastor Tim before doing so as the church will pay the registration fee.

On Sunday May 24, the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, we will shift to our summer worship schedule with only one service at 9am.

This Sunday is Graduate Sunday, where we will recognize the members of our congregation who are graduating from high school or college.

It’s time to collect any loose change as we have our noisy offering this Sunday.

God’s blessings,
Pastor Tim
