The 20th annual Martin Luther King, “Blessed Are the Peacemakers” community event will be held at 1:00 on January 19 at St. Augustine’s-in-the-Woods Episcopal Church, 5217 Honeymoon Bay Road in Freeland. The event theme is “Nonviolent Resistance: From Martin Luther King to ‘No Kings’ and Beyond.”

The Martin Luther King Whidbey community gatherings have sought to connect 1960s Civil Rights Movement with current racial justice issues. This year’s event will connect the nonviolent resistance of the 1960s with the 2025 Whidbey Island nonviolent pro democracy street rallies. Videos of these marvelous street rallies will be shown.

Featured speaker will be the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia’s Canon for Multicultural Ministry and Community Transformation, The Rev. Carla Robinson.

Music has always been an important part of the “Blessed Are the Peacemakers “ events. This year the music will be led by Whidbey resident Barbara Dunn. LaCresha Jones-Mayes will present an interpretive dance

South Whidbey High School members of the United Student Leaders (USL) will be among the readers as will Pamoja Place representatives.

The Martin Luther King, “Blessed Are the Peacemakers” community event is sponsored by the St. Augustine’s Episcopal Peace Fellowship.
