Daniel 12: A Breakdown and Its Relevance Today
Daniel 12 is the final chapter of the Book of Daniel. It is both prophetic and practical. It points to future events, but it also speaks to how believers should live in every generation.
1. A Time of Great Trouble
Daniel 12:1 (NIV)
“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people, everyone whose name is found written in the book, will be delivered.”
What It Meant
Daniel was shown a future period of unprecedented trouble and shaking. Michael the archangel is seen standing in defense of God’s people.
How It Applies Today
Many believers see increasing global instability:
* Wars and rumors of wars
* Economic uncertainty
* Moral confusion
* Spiritual deception
* Persecution of Christians in many nations
While history has seen many difficult seasons, Jesus echoed Daniel’s words in Matthew 24 when speaking about the last days.
The message is not “be afraid.”
The message is “be prepared.”
God’s people are not promised exemption from hardship, but they are promised His preservation.
⸻
2. The Resurrection Is Real
Daniel 12:2 (NIV)
“Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.”
What It Meant
One of the clearest Old Testament references to resurrection and final judgment.
How It Applies Today
Our culture focuses heavily on the present life.
Daniel reminds us:
* This world is temporary.
* Every person will stand before God.
* Eternity is real.
* Choices matter.
This is why the Gospel is urgent.
⸻
3. The Wise Will Shine
Daniel 12:3 (NIV)
“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.”
What It Meant
God honors those who remain faithful and lead others toward Him.
How It Applies Today
This verse speaks directly to:
* Pastors
* Evangelists
* Disciplers
* Parents
* Mentors
* Every believer who points people to Christ
Notice God does not celebrate popularity.
He celebrates faithfulness.
A believer with 10 followers who faithfully shares Christ may be accomplishing more eternally than someone with millions of views but no truth.
⸻
4. Knowledge Will Increase
Daniel 12:4 (NIV)
“But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.”
What It Meant
The prophecy would not be fully understood until the appropriate time.
How It Applies Today
Many point to:
* The internet
* Artificial Intelligence
* Instant global communication
* Massive scientific advancement
* Rapid transportation
Never before has information traveled so quickly.
Yet there is an important distinction:
Knowledge has increased. Wisdom has not necessarily increased.
We know more than any generation before us, but many still do not know God.
⸻
5. The Question Everyone Wants Answered
Daniel 12:6
“How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?”
This is the same question believers still ask today.
“When will Jesus return?”
“When is the end?”
Daniel receives a surprising answer.
God gives signs, but not a detailed calendar.
⸻
6. The Prophecy Is Sealed Until the End
Daniel 12:9
“Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end.”
Application
God intentionally withheld some details.
This should produce humility.
Many have predicted dates.
Every one of them has been wrong.
Daniel teaches us that some mysteries belong to God.
⸻
7. Separation Is Increasing
Daniel 12:10
“Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked.”
How It Applies Today
One thing becoming increasingly visible is polarization.
People are moving in one of two directions:
* Toward God
* Away from God
Pressure reveals character.
Trials reveal foundations.
The same heat that softens wax hardens clay.
Many believers today are experiencing refinement, while others are becoming increasingly resistant to truth.
⸻
8. Understanding Belongs to the Wise
Daniel 12:10 (continued)
“None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.”
This does not mean intellectual superiority.
Biblically, wisdom begins with reverence for God.
Spiritual things are spiritually discerned.
Today many people can explain technology, politics, economics, and culture, yet remain blind to spiritual realities.
⸻
9. Daniel Is Told to Keep Going
Daniel 12:13 (NIV)
“As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.”
The Final Message
After all the visions…
After all the prophecies…
After all the mysteries…
God essentially tells Daniel:
Keep walking. Stay faithful. Finish well.
That is the application for today.
Not obsession with timelines.
Not fear.
Not endless speculation.
Faithfulness.
Prayer.
Holiness.
Discipleship.
Evangelism.
Trust.
⸻
Daniel 12 and Right Now
If Daniel were speaking to the Church today, his message might sound like this:
* Trouble is increasing, but God is still on His throne.
* Knowledge is exploding, but wisdom is still found in God.
* Deception is growing, but truth remains unchanged.
* Eternity is approaching for everyone.
* The righteous must shine brighter, not hide.
* Some prophecies are becoming clearer.
* The mission has not changed: lead people to righteousness.
* Stay faithful until the end.
The chapter ends not with fear, but with hope.
The final word of Daniel is not destruction.
The final word is resurrection, inheritance, and victory for those who belong to God.
