Under new laws, draft registration in the US will be automatic starting in December. This means that youth must work even harder to document their nonviolent beliefs. Be informed. Last week we published an article discussing the coming implementation of automatic draft registration. We promised a follow up about what would likely happen if an actual draft was enacted. Since this is International Conscientious Objectors Day, it is the perfect time to close this loop.

As of the writing of this, there is no federal draft. The laws governing both registration with the Selective Service System and the procedures if a draft were began are included in the Military Selective Service Act. The act includes the requirements that any male between 18 and 26 must register with the Selective Service and that they could be inducted for military participation unless exempted. However, actually returning to a draft would require an act of Congress. If that were to happen, the first draftees are required to be inducted within 193 days of the enactment of the law......

One of the less heralded elements of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act enacted in December of 2025 was the requirement that the Selective Service System begin the automatic registration of adult males between the age of 18 and 26. As of the writing of this, these automatic registrations are to begin in December of 2026.
