On this Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom, resilience, and the contributions of African Americans.

On June 19, 1865,, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order No. 3, announcing that enslaved people in Texas were free under the Emancipation Proclamation. This came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, because enforcement of emancipation depended on the progress of the Civil War and the arrival of Union forces in some areas.

Considering the current racial climate and political upheaval we are experience, we reflect on faith, perseverance, God’s grace, and the ongoing call to love, justice, and unity.

Today marks the 11th anniversary of when an anti-black mass shooting and hate crime occurred in Charleston, South Carolina. On that day, a White supremacist entered our sister church, Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and sat in on a Bible study session for about an hour before opening fire on the other participants, killing nine people, including the Pastor of the flock.
