Gaslighting doesn’t just happen in unhealthy relationships. It happens in churches too.

When people are constantly told, “You’re just offended,” “That didn’t happen,” or “You’re the problem for asking questions,” they can begin doubting their own judgment instead of recognizing what’s actually happening.

One of the goals of gaslighting is to make you question your reality so you stop questioning theirs.

Truth doesn’t fear examination. Control does.

One of the biggest red flags is when a pastor can’t be questioned.

Nobody is above accountability.

Nobody.

The moment a leader acts like they can never be challenged, corrected, or questioned, something is off.

I’ve learned that healthy leaders aren’t threatened by questions.

They welcome them.

Why?

Because truth has nothing to hide.

Control, on the other hand, gets nervous when people start asking questions.

“Healthy leadership welcomes accountability. Unhealthy leadership avoids it.”

One of the dangers in some church environments is that people become so dependent on a leader that they stop discerning for themselves. They stop asking questions. They stop searching the Scriptures. Everything gets filtered through one voice.

That’s not healthy.

God gave us His Spirit and His Word so we could know Him, hear His voice, and grow in maturity.

06/01/2026

Healthy leaders build your confidence in hearing God, not your dependence on hearing them.

God gave you His Spirit and His Word for a reason.

God wants mature sons and daughters, not spiritual hostages.

If you’re scared to question your pastor, that’s a problem.

I’m not talking about being disrespectful. I’m talking about asking honest questions.

Healthy leadership isn’t threatened by questions. Controlling leadership is.

God is not intimidated by your questions, and a healthy leader shouldn’t be either.

Truth doesn’t fear questions. Control does.

Many people stay in unhealthy church environments because they’re afraid of what might happen if they leave.

But a healthy church won’t make you feel like leaving means betraying God.

We honor leadership, but our obedience belongs to the Lord.

Leaving a church is not the same thing as leaving God.

The more I tried to force growth in my life, the more frustrated and confused I became. I’ve learned that real growth doesn’t come from striving nonstop - it comes from resting in Christ, abiding in Him, and trusting what He’s doing in you. When you stay connected to Jesus, growth naturally happens. Grace can produce what fleshly effort never will.
