You've Been Wrong About Strongholds This Whole Time

Most of us have a misunderstanding of what a stronghold is.

We assume it's like a chokehold from the devil, like Satan's got us in a headlock and won't let go.

It makes sense we'd think that, but if you dig into the Bible, a stronghold is different than you might assume.

The Hebrew word for stronghold is matsuda, and it means a fortress, a castle, or a high, rocky place of defense.

So a stronghold isn't something somebody does to you. It's a place you can go to. Picture a castle standing high on a hill.

Throughout the Old Testament, strongholds are referenced as places of refuge, places of safety, hiding places to protect you against attacks from the enemy.

And not only are strongholds mentioned, but God Himself is often compared to a stronghold.

King David said it in Psalm 9:9, "The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble." He said it again in Psalm 18:2, "The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." God was his refuge, his protector, his place to run.
