A Name Under Siege, Part II: That the World May Know | 2 Kings 19:14–37

What do you do when the problem before you is bigger than anything you can handle?

An ancient king faced an overwhelming enemy and an impossible situation. Rather than relying on his own strength, he took the threatening letter into the temple and spread it before the LORD.

What might happen if we did the same?

Experience what it means to trust God when we cannot fix what is wrong, and why God’s answer is about something far greater than our own deliverance: that the world may know.

A Name Under Siege: What Is This Confidence? (2 Kings 18:1–19:13)

Popeye knew where to find strength: a can of spinach! But where do we turn when the things we've trusted for strength begin to fail?

King Hezekiah's name means “Yahweh strengthens.” When the mighty Assyrian Empire surrounded Jerusalem, that confidence came under attack. Money, military power, political alliances—even the things God had once used—could no longer guarantee security.

Through Hezekiah's struggle, we discover what it means to hold fast to the LORD when everything around us seems to argue against Him.

And we look beyond Hezekiah to Jesus, the faithful King whose trust endured even the cross. When everything we trust for strength comes under siege, we're called to hold fast to the LORD.

Pray for the Democratic Republic of Congo, where one of the more recent international workers who spoke here is ministering. Although these concerns did not come up during his brief time with us, the country is now facing the largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak it has ever experienced and the second-largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded anywhere. Pray for the sick, grieving families and exhausted health workers, and that the outbreak will soon be brought under control.

Pray also for the Congolese people, whose extraordinary cobalt wealth has too often brought exploitation rather than prosperity—the tragedy exposed in the book Cobalt Red, including dangerous working conditions and child labor. As Congo seeks closer economic ties with the United States and less dependence on China’s dominance of its mining industry, pray that these changes will protect workers, reduce corruption and exploitation, and allow the Congolese people themselves to benefit from the wealth beneath their soil.
