Saint of the Day: Bishop Douglas Deshotel has designated June 8 as the Diocese of Lafayette’s Annual Day of Prayer for Protection Against Hurricanes, entrusting our communities to God’s providence as we begin hurricane season.
This day coincides with the feast of Saint Medard, a sixth-century French bishop who has long been invoked for protection from storms and severe weather. For generations, many Cajun and Creole Catholics have maintained a devotion to Saint Medard, seeking his intercession for fair weather and safety during times of natural disaster.
As a Diocese on the Gulf Coast, we unite in prayer for the protection of our families, homes, parishes, schools, businesses, first responders, and all who may be affected by storms in the months ahead. May this day be an opportunity to renew our trust in the Lord and prepare for hurricane season with both prayer and prudence.
Saint Medard, patron for protection against hurricanes and severe weather, pray for us!
