Gary Memorial United Methodist Church

Gary Memorial United Methodist Church An historic place for prayer set on Standfast Hill in Maryland’s beautiful Patapsco River Valley Our church was built in 1879.

Organized in 1852 to serve mill workers and residents in the town known at that time as Alberton (a mill town established in the early 1800′s) Gary Memorial eventually became a United Brethren congregation. The mill and town were sold to CR Daniels in 1940 and the name of the town changed to Daniels. In the mid 1960’s, residents were moved from the company housing which was demolished. In 1972, Hu

rricane Agnes flooded the entire valley including the mill, leaving only our historic granite church high on ‘Standfast Hill.’ We became a United Methodist Church in 1968.

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her c**t by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a c**t, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the c**t and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Our historic church is the last remaining intact building that dates back to the mill town of Daniels (Alberton/Elysville). Many former and a few remaining parishioners lived in the town of Daniels. This video is an informative look at the history of the town over the years and what remains now. If you are interested in this history we welcome you to experience it first hand by joining us on Sunday mornings and on April 20th for a special Historic Church Concert presented by the Howard County Historical Society.
