Before we serve, lead, teach, encourage, or minister to others, there is something even more foundational: remaining close to Christ.

Jesus told His disciples:

“Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.”
— John 15:4 CSB

Ministry can become filled with responsibilities, needs, schedules, decisions, and people depending on us. Yet our strength was never meant to come simply from working harder or carrying more.

Christ is the source.

As churches gather for worship today and ministers prepare to serve, may we remember that fruitful ministry grows from a life that remains connected to Jesus.

Before the sermon, the meeting, the outreach, the counseling, the planning, and everything else we are called to do, Christ comes first.

May we remain in Him, depend on Him, and let everything we do in His name flow from our relationship with Him.

Sometimes the Best Ministry Begins by Listening

In ministry, it can be easy to feel that we always need to have the right words.

But sometimes the person in front of us doesn't need an immediate answer. They need someone willing to listen.

A thoughtful conversation can create space for someone to share a burden, ask a difficult question, work through uncertainty, or simply know that another person genuinely cares about what they are carrying.

Listening does not mean we have every solution. It means being present enough to hear someone before deciding what they need.

That kind of care can be an important part of Christian ministry and fellowship. Whether we're serving as pastors, ministry leaders, missionaries, volunteers, or simply brothers and sisters in Christ, we can reflect the love of Christ not only through what we say, but also through the attention and compassion we give to others.

As we serve this week, may we be willing not only to speak words of encouragement, but also to make room to hear the people God places in our path.

A Calling to Ministry Is Also a Calling to Keep Growing

Serving in ministry asks much of those who answer the call. There are people to shepherd, decisions to make, Scripture to handle faithfully, challenges to navigate, and opportunities to share the Gospel with wisdom and grace.

That is why preparation and continued growth matter.

UNTCI seeks to support those serving Christ by providing ministry relationships, resources, education, and opportunities that can help ministers and Christian leaders continue developing as they carry out the work entrusted to them.

None of us reaches a point where there is nothing more to learn. Whether someone has served for a few months or several decades, there is value in continuing to grow—in our understanding of Scripture, in wisdom, in leadership, and above all, in our walk with Christ.

Faithful ministry isn't simply about being called. It's about continuing to grow as we answer that call.

Jesus made the whip . A lot to unpack from a powerful yet simple moment .

He Sat Down and Made the Whip

There is a detail in the Temple story we shouldn’t rush past:

Jesus made the whip Himself.

John tells us, “When He had made a scourge of small cords…” (John 2:15).

Think about what that means.

He saw the corruption.
He saw worship turned into commerce.
He saw His Father’s house being exploited.

And He didn’t explode.

He sat with it.

Cord by cord, strand by strand, He fashioned the instrument He would carry into that confrontation.

That changes the picture.

This wasn’t a temper tantrum.

It wasn’t reckless rage.

It was deliberate righteousness.

Every moment spent gathering those cords was another opportunity to walk away.

He didn’t.

Every twist was intentional.
Every knot had purpose.
Every second confirmed His resolve.

Then He stood up.

Tables overturned. Coins scattered. Animals moved. Money changers fled.

Jesus wasn’t out of control.

Jesus was completely under control—and completely unwilling to tolerate what dishonored His Father.

That’s the Jesus we sometimes forget.

Meek enough to wash feet.
Tender enough to hold children.
Compassionate enough to touch lepers.

Yet fierce enough to make a whip and walk straight into corruption.

There are moments when holiness whispers.

There are moments when holiness weeps.

And there are moments when holiness braids the cord, stands up, and turns over the table.

Jesus didn’t lose His temper in the Temple.
He revealed His zeal.

“Zeal for Your house has consumed Me.” — John 2:17

Christians today are not the first believers to wrestle with difficult questions.

Across centuries, followers of Christ have studied Scripture, debated theology, defended the faith, faced cultural challenges, made mistakes, corrected errors, and sought to understand what faithful Christian living requires.

That is one reason studying Church history matters.

It reminds us that Christianity did not begin with our generation—and that we can learn both from the wisdom and from the failures of those who came before us.

Theological education gives students an opportunity not only to study what Christians believe, but also to understand how those beliefs have been expressed, defended, challenged, and lived throughout history.

Sometimes looking backward helps us serve more wisely moving forward.

There is no need for competition in the work of the Kingdom.

One church may reach people another never will. One ministry may serve a need another was never called to meet. Different ministers will have different gifts, assignments, communities, and opportunities—but all can contribute to the work of making Christ known.

That gives us a reason to encourage one another rather than compare ourselves with one another.

- When another church grows, we can celebrate.
- When another ministry reaches someone with the Gospel, we can give thanks.
- When another servant of Christ is doing good work, we can pray for them and cheer them on.

The Kingdom of God is bigger than any one church, ministry, organization, or leader.

As we serve in the places God has entrusted to us, may we also remain thankful for the many others faithfully serving alongside us throughout the Body of Christ.

Christian ministry takes many forms.

Some are called to pastor local churches. Others serve through missions, evangelism, teaching, outreach, chaplaincy, or specialized ministries. While the settings may differ, the purpose remains the same: faithfully serving Christ and helping carry the Gospel to others.

United New Testament Church International Ministry Association seeks to support that work by providing ministers and ministries with opportunities for ministerial association, credentialing, resources, missions involvement, and other forms of practical ministry support.

These things are not the mission itself—they are tools that can help strengthen and support those who are carrying out the mission.

Our desire is to see Christian ministers and ministries equipped to serve faithfully wherever God has placed them.
