It's time that we realized we are not in control. Our verse of the day today encourages us to stop and recognize that the LORD is God, not us. As a result, we should "cease striving." Let us exalt Him among the nations!

"You think you're the only ones going to heaven!" The church of Christ has heard that a lot over the years. However, it's worth noting that simply sitting in a meeting house of the church of Christ doesn't automatically mean you're going to heaven. As Jesus would later say in this same chapter, we must do the Father's will if we are going to enter heaven.

Today's verses are in the middle of a prayer that Paul prayed when penning his letter to the Ephesians via the Holy Spirit. Being a Christian requires strength, but not our own. The Holy Spirit is the One who gives it to us. When we read what He has revealed in Scripture, He indeed gives us what we need to carry on and to "know the love of Christ which passes knowledge."

Order of the Day

82 years ago today, the Allied forces would take on the Axis Powers in what would be a very bloody battle. It was on Tuesday, June 6, 1944 that the United States, Great Britain, and the USSR would storm the beaches of Normandy, France in order to bring a quick end to the N**i regime in Europe. From the Eisenhower Library: "The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, brought together the land, air, and sea forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The operation, given the codename OVERLORD, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France. The beaches were given the code names UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, and SWORD. The invasion force included 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries. Almost 133,000 troops from the United States, the British Commonwealth, and their allies, landed on D-Day. Casualties from these countries during the landing numbered 10,300. By June 30, over 850,000 men, 148,000 vehicles, and 570,000 tons of supplies had landed on the Normandy shores. Fighting by the brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen of the allied forces western front, and Russian forces on the eastern front, led to the defeat of German N**i forces. On May 7, 1945, German General Alfred Jodl signed an unconditional surrender at Reims, France." Friends, we are at war, even today. Our enemy is more formidable than Adolf Hi**er and Benito Mussolini. There are many individuals who aren't firing rifles or throwing grenades, but shooting fiery darts and causing many to fall. Our foe doesn't care if there is collateral damage on the unsuspecting. The devil wants to aim his arrows at each of us. If you're a Christian, he has his sights specifically aimed at you. If you're not, you're mortally wounded from those darts.

As followers of Jesus, we need to have our armor on (Ephesians 6:10-20). We need to storm the spiritual Normandy and not kill those on the opposing side, but eradicate those things that cause our opponents to realize they are fighting for the wrong side (2 Corinthians 10:3-6; 2 Timothy 2:24-26). By doing what the Scripture says, we have the "order of the day."

In the verses prior to our verse of the day, the Holy Spirit wrote through Paul's pen about what the day of the Lord will look like. If you are a Christian, it should bring comfort to you. If you are not a Christian, it's time to wake up!

If you are employed by someone, you usually know what your day to day tasks involve. If you work as a teacher, you know you have to be at the school a certain number of days (187, if memory serves me correctly) and you have to teach the subject (or grade) assigned to you. If you work as a medical professional (whether a doctor, nurse, etc.), you know you have to report to work at the healthcare facility at a certain time and perform the duties assigned to you and within your scope of practice. Whatever career you find yourself engaging, you know it is your job. By law, you are expected to be paid a minimum wage for your work. However, most employers understand that one has to "make a living," so to say. By paying their employees, they recognize that they depend upon their paycheck for bill payments, basic necessities, and other things.

How many of us have ever considered a preacher's work? I once saw a photo a friend had shared of an iceberg. The tip of said iceberg was above water and labeled, "the sermon." The vast majority of it was underneath and called, "the preparation." That is exactly how it feels when getting sermons ready each week: a lot of preparation (hours a day at times!) for only a few minutes of presentation. Not only that, but he does other things. Maybe he teaches Bible classes to various audiences, provides counseling, and other things involved in helping a congregation with understanding the words of God.

Notice what the Holy Spirit says in 1 Corinthians 9...

"Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? For it is written in the Law of Moses, 'You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.' Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel."

Why care? Because "it's his job!"
