It's one of my favorite times of the year!

Peach Season.

I have been eating GEORGIA peaches (cause Minnesota does not know how to do peaches) for weeks now and making all things peach. My favorite? Magnolia's Peach Cobbler!

Gratitude fills me every single time I bit into one. God created such a lovely fruit. And my grandson loves them even more than I do.

Thirty years ago, we lived in Georgia right in the middle of peach and pecan orchards. Our house sided up to an old pecan orchard. The neighbor would periodically fill a bag of pecans handing the bag across the fence dividing our back yards. The peach orchards beckoned from down the road a bit and of course, peaches in the grocery store made due when there was no time for an orchard visit.

Some of my favorite memories from childhood come from peaches. Sitting at the kitchen table in a hot kitchen with a window air conditioning unit trying to keep up with the humidity, I would peel and peel and peel peaches while the juice ran down my arms. The day would end with peach cobblers, frozen peaches and jarred jam and me a sticky mess. Not to mention what the floor and table looked like.

I remember hopping in the back of an old pick up truck with other kids while our moms piled into the front seat and we would travel to the peach orchard returning with bushels of peaches surrounding us. Don't even think about us riding down a highway with the air whipping our long hair into tangles and bugs landing in our mouths. It was glorious. It was dangerous. It was life then.

I didn't appreciate how much I loved peaches and how good they were until I moved to Minnesota. I mean we have them here. . . but they come from places other than Georgia and they. are. not. great.

We have been quiet here at Sojourn for a couple months. Resting and being restored.

One big event this summer was my 40th wedding anniversary. 40 years feels like a long time. We were married in Oklahoma City in 1986. Two kids who had no idea what they were doing. Somehow by the grace of God we made it this far. . .

We camped quite a bit in those days taking along friends, brothers or cousins at times. We would put up a tent and throw sleeping bags on the ground. Cooking over an open fire was about as fancy as we got.

As the years passed and I was diagnosed with RA, our camping changed a bit. Air mattresses were bought and my body appreciated them. We still cooked over an open fire at times but also invested in a cookstove and grill. Soft chairs for around the campfire were a necessity. As our boys got older, we loved watching them set up camp while we put our feet up and let them feel like they were adulting.

In the past decade, camping has been out of the question so we have moved onto renting cabins. However, this year we decided to glamp. A fun geodesic dome tent wasn't far from our home complete with soft bed, bathroom and kitchenette. It was definitely glamorous compared to our old days camping in Oklahoma.

I've found that changing expectations is key to holding onto joy in the midst of chronic illness (and other hard things.) It won't look like it used to. . . but it can still be good.
