I was thinking today about why I keep teaching Bible studies and leading the Sojourn community.
It's because of the women who need to know they aren't alone. The joy I get from teaching the Bible that is so dear to my heart. Learning more about Jesus who has my heart. It's the friendships- both in person and ones I've cultivated online. And of course, it is where I know God wants me to be right now.
Also, there is a foundational reason. One that goes back 30 years to a group of women in Warner Robbins, Georgia named Terri and Sue and Peggy and Martha and Nancy and Donna and others whose names escape me at the moment. They met every Monday night for Bible study. Even though they were in different life stages, they welcomed me into their fold. . . me a twenty-something year old mom with littles who was clueless.
It was my first Bible study with women. Those women held my babies in the nursery and sometimes during the study. They listened to my story and encouraged me. They didn't flinch when I said weird things in my own immaturity. They showed me what faithfulness looked like. They loved me. Truly loved me.
It isn't hyperbole to say that those women changed my life.
I think it is fitting since this study is about women who encountered Jesus that I dedicate this study to those Warner Robbins Church of the Nazarene women who made such a difference to me. They probably never knew it. Just a young woman passing through the air force town for a couple of years. And yet. . . what would I have done without them?
Come join us for our next study. If you are teetering. . . come once and find out if it is for you. If you are feeling lonely, this is your invitation. If you feel like you don't belong, you can belong here. If you are wanting to know Jesus better, here is the place to do that. Whatever your reason. . . we want you to be a part of our community.
