Throughout the existence of the church, there has been a constant enduring of difficulties, hardships, and various crises that believers have weathered. From attacks on the gospel, marriage, the family, gender and sexuality, and truth itself -- the church has had to stand and fight.

And in times of difficulty, when competent, faithful, and effective leaders do not come forward, the church will pay a high price. In such times of trouble, good leadership is even more important. The dispersed church that Peter was writing to was in the same position, therefore Peter takes time to specifically address the elders of the church and exhorts them to faithful leadership and fidelity to the gospel.

In 1991, the most popular commercial of the year was for Gatorade that featured Michael Jordan. The commercial spoke about dreaming to be “like Mike.” Little kids were alongside the best basketball player ever wishing to be like him – all while drinking Gatorade. The commercial was clear – if you want to be “like Mike,” then you needed to drink Gatorade. As Christians, our aim is to be like Christ. However, to be like Christ, Peter tells his readers they are going to have to endure suffering, and they need to suffer well.

Peter’s announcement that “the end of all things is at hand” is not a call to speculation or fear, but to ordinary Christian faithfulness. Until Christ comes, His people are to think clearly and pray, love one another earnestly, open their lives to one another through hospitality without grumbling, and faithfully use what God has entrusted to them for the good of others. The grace is God’s, the strength is God’s, and all the glory belongs to Christ.

The Christian life is a call to live radically different from this world, and it is often costly and difficult. The world, and our own indwelling sin, are hostile toward believers. Therefore, Christians must be willing to obey God even when it involves suffering, this shows that they have made a clear break with previous sinful patterns of life, and that their commitment is now to live 'no longer for human passions but for the will of God!
