One of my favorite songs is Harry Chapin's rendition of "Cat's in the Cradle." I always found the lyrics and the tune catchy, and as I grew older, I began to understand the message of the song. I am thankful that I did not have a Father who was uninvolved in my life. He taught me to read, (the Sports Section of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch), taught me to tell time, taught me sports, taught me how to fish, and even brought me into coaching with him when I was just a young teenager myself.
The Dad in the song is suffering from a type of paralysis. He never has time to spend with his son, and he is tied down to his schedule. He always claims that "we'll get together then. You know we'll have a good time then." But he never gets off his "mat" and rises up a changed man. In fact, he discovers that his son had "grown up just like me."
In Matthew 9:1-8, a group of faith-filled friends gets their physically paralyzed friend to Jesus. The man is confined to his mat, his bed, and without a change in circumstance, his life will continue on as it has always been. The friends want him healed, but Jesus deals with the man's spirit first. Join me tomorrow morning at Duncanville Methodist Church at 9 am as we look at the Scripture and "Get that Cat out of the Cradle."
Several of our members are traveling and on vacation, so tomorrow would be a great day to come and visit, and help those of us who are here make a joyful noise through praise and worship.
