Timeless Hymns

Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed?

Why do we sing when we gather for worship?

Congregational singing is much more than music added to a worship service. Through biblically faithful songs, we remind one another of the gospel, learn and proclaim the truths of Scripture, and respond together to what God has done.

This week's hymn is a wonderful example. "Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed?" takes us to the cross, reminds us of the seriousness of our sin and the incredible love and grace of Christ, and leads us to consider how we should respond.

Before Genesis 1:1, God already was.

Before there was time, light, earth, or humanity, God was already God. He wasn’t lonely. He wasn’t incomplete. He wasn’t waiting for creation to provide something He lacked.

That matters, because before we begin tracing the story of Scripture, we need to know something about the God whose story we are entering.

In the newest post in THE BIG PICTURE: God at the Center from Genesis to Revelation, we’re going to stand for a moment at the edge of Genesis and ask:

Who was God before “In the beginning”?

And what does that reveal about the way we should read everything that comes next?

We are part of the story.
But this is HIS story.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the way we read the Bible.

We often begin by asking, “What does this mean for me?” And while application is important, I’m becoming increasingly convinced that there is a question we need to ask first:
What does this reveal about God?

The Bible begins, “In the beginning, God…” (Genesis 1:1), and near its end we read, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man” (Revelation 21:3).

Everything in between tells one unfolding story.

We are part of that story, but we are not the main character. God is.

That’s the idea behind a new series I’m beginning:

THE BIG PICTURE
God at the Center from Genesis to Revelation

We’re going to step back and look at the whole picture of Scripture, then begin moving closer, tracing the major movements, promises, covenants, and theological threads that connect Genesis to Revelation. Through it all, we’ll keep coming back to one question:

What does this reveal about God?

I’ll admit, taking on something this big is a little overwhelming. Scripture is vast, its theology is deep, and I have so much left to learn. I also can’t promise a particular timeline. I don’t want to rush through God’s Word simply to keep a schedule. I want to study carefully and move through this in God’s time, not mine.

So please pray for me as I begin. Pray that I’ll handle Scripture faithfully, remain teachable, and keep the focus where it belongs: on Him.

And I’d love for you to join me. Open your Bible with me. Ask questions. Share connections I may have missed. Let’s discover the big picture together.

My prayer is that when we reach the end, we won’t simply know the Bible better.

We will know its Author better.
