The 25th anniversary of 9/11 is Friday. We will be holding a community prayer service at 6pm 1277 S. Governors Ave. It's more than a time of Remembrance, which is important, it is a time to rededicate ourselves to faith in God over fear, community over conflict, preparation over panic.
The week after 9/11 this nation was united because we saw the heroism in each other, we saw fellow Americans run to danger and rescue tens of thousands at the cost of their own lives, we saw love in action. Casually #1 is FDNY Chaplain Mychal Judge who was ministering hope and faith to the injured. He died administering the last rites. He showed the contrast between those whose radical faith was a reason to hate and launch an unjust attack of hatred and terrorism and a faith of those who found a reason to love others more than life itself.
After 9/11 the churches were packed because we remembered our foundations, faith, hope and love endure even through the flames.
We need to be watchful and alert like Nehemiah, but we should never be fearful and anxious. We should be prayerful and prepared. We can choose our response to evil. Let it be unity, faith, love and honor. It's those 4 things that showed us the best of who we are on 9/11 and afterwards. Remembering them 25 years later will allow us to find it again. Friday's tragedy in our city reminds us that it's time for us restore that foundation.
