📖 Scriptures for Sunday June 28th.

This Sunday we study 1 Samuel 8–15, Israel rejects God's direct rule to demand a human king. Despite God and the prophet Samuel warning them that a monarch will heavily tax, enslave, and conscript them, God grants their request. Samuel anoints Saul as Israel's first king, but Saul's repeated disobedience soon leads to God rejecting him as king.

Scripture for this Sunday June 21st

This week we study 1 Samuel 5–7, in which the Philistines capture the Ark of the Covenant and suffer a devastating plague. To stop the suffering, they return the Ark to Israel alongside golden offerings. Afterward, God strikes down dozens of curious Israelites who look inside the sacred vessel.

Scripture for Sunday June 14th
1 Samuel 4: Israel attempts to use the Ark of the Covenant as a magical good-luck charm in battle against the Philistines. The tactic fails, 30,000 Israelites are killed, and the Ark is captured.The Tragedy at Shiloh: Eli's wicked sons (Hophni and Phinehas) are killed in battle. Upon hearing that the Ark has been captured, the 98-year-old high priest Eli falls backward, breaks his neck, and dies.Ichabod: Hearing the devastating news, Eli's pregnant daughter-in-law goes into premature labor and dies in childbirth. She names the newborn Ichabod, which means "the glory has departed from Israel".

Scripture for Sunday June 7th
The book of 1 Samuel begins with the birth of the prophet Samuel, who was also the last of the judges appointed to try to guide the tribes of Israel through times of apostasy. Hannah had great faith. While she was at the tabernacle, she wept and prayed to the Lord for a child. After witnessing Hannah’s sorrow and grief and finding out the cause, Eli, the high priest, revealed to Hannah that God would grant her desire for children. When she gave birth to a son, she named him Samuel. To keep the promise she made to the Lord, Hannah brought Samuel to Eli to serve the Lord. As Samuel grew in favor with the Lord and the people, Eli and his household were chastened for not honoring God.
