Living as a "Living Sacrifice" (and Why We Keep Crawling Off the Altar)

Ever feel like you’re constantly trying to steer a car from the backseat? That’s what happens when we rely entirely on our own understanding. We burn ourselves out trying to control outcomes, repair broken situations, or fix other people, only to realize we were never meant to carry the wheel in the first place.

In Celebrate Recovery, Lesson 5 breaks down the acrostic TURN—a powerful blueprint for what it actually means to surrender your life and will to God’s care and control:

Trust: Trust Christ as your savior and Lord. (Romans 10:9)
Understand: Understand that you are not in control, and lean on God's wisdom instead of your own. (Proverbs 3:5–6)
Renew: Renew your mind by letting God transform the way you think. (Romans 12:2)
Next: Next step—accept God's grace and forgiveness once and for all. (*Romans 3:22a*)

The biggest takeaway? Turning your life over to Christ is a once-in-a-lifetime commitment, but turning your will over to Him requires a daily recommitment.

The trouble with offering ourselves as a "living sacrifice" (Romans 12:1) is that living sacrifices have a habit of crawling off the altar the moment things get uncomfortable or uncertain. When we grab the steering wheel back, we end up right back in self-reliance, anxiety, and frustration.

Surrender isn't a sign of weakness; it’s the ultimate act of trust. It’s choosing to stop managing the universe and finally letting the One who created it handle the heavy lifting.

Your testimony is more than the story of what you’ve been through—it’s evidence of what God can redeem. When someone finds the courage to share their story, pain becomes purpose, healing brings hope, and others realize they are not alone.

Recovery isn’t about forcing everything to work—it’s about releasing our grip and trusting God with what comes next.

Today, may we have the courage to let go of what we cannot control and the faith to follow where He leads. 🙏

Some of the deepest peace comes when you stop asking, "How do I make this happen?" and start trusting that God already knows how to bring what's meant for you into your life. You don't have to chase what he is already preparing. 🤍
