Evangelist Samuel Wood's Message
The Born of Water and Spirit
John 3:5
We need to understand the Bible perspective of being born of water and the Spirit.
I. Born of Water
There are two main biblical interpretations and both stay within Scripture.
A) Natural Birth
1) Water refers to physical birth (amniotic fluid)
2) This fits the context: Nicodemus is confused about
being “born again” and Jesus constrasts:
a) Flesh gives birth to flesh.
b) Spirit gives birth to spirit – John 3:6
3) So, Jesus is saying;
a)You need more than natural-birth – you need
spiritual birth.
b) Cleansing/repentance
1) Water often symbolizes cleansing in Scripture.
2)God promises to sprinkle clean water and give
new spirit. – Ezekiel 36:25-27
3)John the Baptist’s baptism – repentance
preparing the heart.
a)This points to repentance and cleansing from
sin, not water alone saving.
II. Born of the Spirit
This is the new birth God does in a person.
A) A work of the Holy Spirit
B) Produces a new heart and new life.
C) Not earned by works
-John 1:12-13
- Titus 3:5
John 6:63 explained best:
“The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing.”
III. Together
1. Water
2. Spirit
3. Together
Jesus is not talking about a ritual alone but a complete transformation.
a) Water – cleaning/natural birth context
b) Spirit – regeneration by God
To be born of water and the Spirit is to be cleansed from sin and made alive by the Holy Spirit, resulting in a new life from God.
Have you received Jesus as your personal Savior? If not, then you will need to admit that you are a sinner and lost. You believe that Jesus is indeed the Son of God, and confess your sins to Jesus, and ask Jesus to forgive your sins. The Blood of Christ will cleanse you and whenever you are ready to follow Jesus, then being baptized with Christ (you die with Christ and you rise with Christ.
John 3:16
John 3:5 - Unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Live a life filled with Love following the example of Jesus Christ.
