Correllian anniversary challenge - Day 7: The future of Correllianism

Today’s prompt asks us to share our hopes for the future of the Correllian Tradition. We often speak about our Ancestors, honor those who came before us, and look back to the generations that built the path we walk today. But the Correllian Tradition is not only shaped by its past. Its future is being shaped right now by the people who are part of it today. The choices we make, the work we do, and the communities we build will become part of the legacy we leave behind when we become the Ancestors of tomorrow.

So, what kind of future do members of our clergy see for the Tradition? One where Correllianism continues to grow and reaches new seekers around the world, offering a spiritual home to people searching for a Pagan path, and giving the next generation the space to step forward and bring fresh perspectives and new voices to our magickal teachings. That future also depends on a strong and active clergy, and on Temples that are not only active in their own communities but connected to one another, sharing projects and working together as a truly global network rather than as isolated communities.

There is also a desire to make the Tradition easier to find and more visible in the wider world. A stronger presence online, including an improved website and more active social media, can help seekers discover Correllianism. But our presence cannot stop at the screen. When our clergy become active in their local communities, putting Correllian values into practice through service and involvement, we show who we are through our actions as well as our teachings. In doing so, the Tradition can play its part in bringing different people together in love and peace.

And then there is a dream that would bring us back to where the story began: a physical home for the Correll Mother Temple in Danville, Illinois, giving the Tradition a place to put down roots once again in its birthplace.

These are only some of our hopes. The future is still unwritten, and that is perhaps the most exciting part. What we build today will become the foundation on which those who come after us will continue.

Correllian anniversary challenge - Day 6: Your favorite Ancestor

In the Correllian Tradition, the Ancestors are much more than a memory of those who came before us. We believe that our Ancestors remain members of our community, even after they have passed beyond the Veil. We honor them, speak with them, learn from them, and carry their work forward. We seek their wisdom and guidance, and we remember that the work we do today is connected to the generations who came before us.

Among all the Ancestors who have a place in our Tradition, one name immediately comes to mind: Orpheis Caroline High-Correll, the founder of the Correllian Tradition.

Caroline was not an ordinary woman for her time. A psychic, spiritual healer, and herbalist, she traveled across North America with the circus she owned with her husband, John Correll. After the destruction of the family settlement in 1876, Caroline devoted herself to preserving her family’s spiritual knowledge and heritage. Three years later, on September 4, 1879, she established what we now know as the Correll Mother Temple in Danville, Illinois, originally calling her Tradition Nativist.

Caroline’s vision was deeply syncretic and, in many ways, ahead of its time. She believed that the world’s Pagan religions needed to come together in the face of colonial Christianity. Her initiation into the Aradian lineage in 1904 connected her Nativist heritage with European Paganism. Over the years, influences from Spiritualism, particularly its emphasis on communication with the Ancestors, and from Hermeticism also became part of the Tradition. These different currents gradually came together, enriching the spiritual and philosophical path that would become the Correllian Tradition we know today.

Today, we honor Caroline High-Correll as one of our Ancestors, and especially as the Ancestor who started it all. We owe her the beginning of the Tradition whose 147th anniversary we celebrate this year, and her legacy continues to live through all of us who walk this path today.

Correllian anniversary challenge - Day 5: Wisdom passed on

Every Tradition depends on the wisdom that is passed from one generation to the next. In the Correllian Tradition, our lessons and rituals are important ways of preserving our teachings, but so are the personal teachings we receive from our teachers, Elders, and fellow Correllians. Sometimes a few words from someone who has walked the path before us can shape the way we understand our own journey for years to come.

As our First Priestess and First Priest, M. Rev. Alyssa Kemp-Highcorrell and M. Rev. Phoenix Coffin-Williams are fortunate to have the opportunity to continue learning from M. Rev. Donald Lewis-Highcorrell, our First Priest Emeritus, and to count on his support and guidance as they carry forward the work of the First Priesthood.

When it comes to wisdom passed on, one of the teachings Lord Donald Lewis has shared with Lord Phoenix is that the spiritual world becomes less mysterious as we come to know ourselves more deeply. The Ancestors, guides, and other spiritual beings we work with may sometimes seem mysterious or elusive. But our fears, desires, assumptions, and the parts of ourselves we have yet to explore can all affect how we experience the spiritual world. The more honestly we explore these parts of ourselves, the better we can understand our spiritual experiences, recognize the lessons they bring, and work with magick in greater alignment with our Higher Self. As we become more aware of our own shadows and personality, we can begin to see more clearly how they influence the way we experience the spiritual world.

For Lord Phoenix, this teaching is a reminder that “Know thyself” is not simply an old saying. It is an essential part of spiritual growth, self-purification, and learning to work with magick in alignment with our Higher Self.

This is wisdom passed on: a teaching received from a teacher, lived through experience, and carried forward into the future.

Correllian anniversary challenge - Day 4: Celebrating together

Today marks the 147th anniversary of the Correllian Tradition!Some celebrations become part of the history of a Tradition. The investiture of M. Rev. Alyssa Kemp-Highcorrell and M. Rev. Phoenix Highcorrell as the First Priestess and First Priest of the Correllian Tradition was one of those moments. It marked a turning point for our Tradition, as a new generation stepped forward to carry the work into the future, with the continued love and support of M. Rev. Donald Lewis-Highcorrell, our First Priest Emeritus.

Lord Phoenix captured the meaning of the moment beautifully:

“Did a thing this morning. On the banks of the Vermillion with my sister and best friend, we ceremonially accepted the mantle of the First Priesthood of the Correllian Tradition. It’s ridiculous because Alyssa and I used to stay up late doing our Degree homework way back when. Discussing topics and dreaming up innovative ways to celebrate our faith.

Now, after having apparently understood the assignment thus far, we pledged to continue to bring the blessing of the Ancestors from these waters, to all our people. Preserving and expanding upon what we have attained so far. Being a nexus for the manifestation of Deity.

To all those who love us, pray for us. Seriously. Pray for and with us. Thank you, thank you to everyone who made this occasion and indeed this weekend a great success. Your attention and support means the world to me.”

On this anniversary, we celebrate not only where our Tradition has come from, but also those who have stepped forward to carry its work into the future. May we continue to celebrate, grow, and walk this path together. 🥰
