See you at church!

Twenty five years ago, if you are old enough to have a clear memory of that day, the world forever changed.

You know where you were, who you were with, and what you were doing.

I cannot ponder the events of this day without thinking of James 4:14

“yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” ESV

On September 11, 2001 the pilots, flight crews, passengers, those in the Towers and the Pentagon, and the first responders began their day with no idea it would be there last.

I pray for many things on a day like today.

First, that for those who grieve the loss of their loved ones to feel the comfort of Almighty God.

Second, that we would show appreciation to those in our community that stand ready to help us in our moment of need like those of FDNY, NYPD, and other first responders did in New York and at the Pentagon.

When you see an EMS member, Fireman, member of the Rescue Squad, Police Officer, someone from the Sheriff’s Office tell them you appreciate them and pray for them regularly.

Third, I pray that days like today will cause us a believers to share the only hope that this world has- the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ.

This day will stand as a witness to the evil man is capable of.

As believers we must resolve to do as Paul instructed in Romans 12:21

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (ESV).

The only lasting good is when a person is made new by the gospel!

Our sin is greater than we are willing to admit, but Christ’s mercy is greater still.

We often respond to sin in one of two ways. We excuse it until it seems insignificant, or we stare at it until forgiveness seems impossible. The gospel permits neither. It shows us the true weight of our guilt while revealing a Savior whose grace is more than sufficient to cover it.

Christ does not receive repentant sinners reluctantly. He does not ration mercy according to the severity of our failures or grow weary when we return to Him broken once again. The same Savior who calls us to confess our sin has already provided everything necessary for our pardon.

This is not permission to take sin lightly. Mercy teaches us to hate the very thing that required the blood of Christ. Yet our fight against sin is never a hopeless attempt to make ourselves worthy. We fight as those who have been forgiven, welcomed, and given new life in Him.

No depth of guilt lies beyond the reach of Christ’s redeeming grace. Bring your sin into the light, turn from it, and rest in the mercy of the Savior who never turns away those who come to Him.
