For those of you joining us online at 9:00 Sunday morning, here’s our bulletin. It’s Labor Day weekend! What events triggered this holiday, and when did it begin? Our sermon is titled “Labor of Love;” we will tie-in scripture readings from Ecclesiastes 2:10-11, Psalm 127:1, 1 Thessalonians 1:1-7, and Matthew 11:28-30.
The children’s message will feature some toothpaste! Learning, laughter, warm fellowship, inspiring music, and the sacrament of communion---all waiting for you Sunday morning. Looking forward to our time together!

Leader: We gather together to celebrate a love for us beyond measure, made known to us in the teachings of scripture.
All: As we gather, we set aside that which clutters our hearts and minds, so we may better sense God’s presence and direction. May it be so!

Words of Confession and Assurance
Leader: We are filled with joy when we are faithful in loving God and neighbor. Yet we acknowledge those times we have not shared the light of Christ as we are called to do. We repent of our unfaithfulness.

Have you noticed?

Signs of changing seasons showing up these days, eh? Interesting to hear reactions from folks as they spot our changing leaves, like this one next to our driveway. Some lament and moan, as the changing colors signify the beginning of the end for our weeks of summer. Others celebrate as they enter their “favorite time of the year!” Whether your mood is worsened or improved by these increasingly noticeable signs, there’s not stopping it---a change of season is ahead. Much like our lives.

Like it or not, our lives are always moving forward into and eventually, through new seasons. New, happy experiences, sometimes sad, difficult ones. Despite the challenging changes, there is a constant. Joshua 1:9 reminds us: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

If there is some fret in your heart as you spy signals of changing seasons in your path, may the promise of this consistent, sacred, holy presence bring comfort and confidence as you journey forward.

During our vacation last week, we spent some evenings sitting around a fire. Have you noticed what happens when a group of folks sit around a fire? I couldn’t help but observe transformation taking place. Cell phones went away, everyone watched, even stared at the flames. A peaceful, contemplative presence came upon us, all because we paid attention to the fire.

We are reminded often in scripture of God’s presence being represented by flame and fire. Moses and the burning bush, Israelites in the wilderness following pillars of flame, the Day of Pentecost serve as a few examples.

I wonder, what would happen if each day, we focused on signs of God’s presence in front of us, much like sitting around a fire at night? Couldn’t these signals of sacredness cause us to put our cell phones down, become contemplative while considering how we might experience and share peace with each other? Wouldn’t paying attention to holiness around us inspire personal and therefore, societal transformation?

Let’s discover where we may encounter the Divine during the days of this week, shall we?

Are you a “telegraphy person?” Telegraphy is a mode of communication that got started in the U.S. in the 1800’s with the telegraph. There is a unique element of telegraphs we will tie-in to our readings Sunday morning from Exodus 3:1-15, Matthew 16:21-28, and most importantly, to us! Join us at 9:00 Sunday morning for learning, laughter, warm fellowship, inspiring music, and a lesson for the kiddos related to the value of “taking things away.”

Turns out Benjamin Waterhouse, born on March 4, 1754, was quite a chap! He was a physician, co-founder and professor at Harvard Medical School. He is well known for being the first doctor to test the smallpox vaccine in the United States, which he carried out on his own family. His roommate at one point in his life was President John Adams. Benjamin corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and rubbed shoulders with George Washington. His portrait hangs in the hallowed halls of Harvard Medical School.

Why is this interesting to the Smith family? My mother’s maiden name is Waterhouse, you see. So, Benjamin Waterhouse is a direct relative. My (twin) brother Shawn, who lives in the Boston area, tracked down Benjamin’s tombstone in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, where we paid a visit to our kin while I was in the area. Dr. Waterhouse left quite a legacy for the Smith/Waterhouse gang.

You will leave a legacy as well, as will I. We have no choice in the matter—we WILL leave a legacy. However, we DO have a choice as to what kind of legacy we will leave.

Each day we have opportunities to leave lasting impressions on people we encounter. The memories we create during these experiences will contribute to the legacies we leave behind. Will we leave legacies of grace, kind and supportive words? Will our legacies include a sharing of transformative love and mercy?

Ol’ Ben set a mighty high bar as far as legacies are concerned, for sure. May the memories of those no longer with us inspire our legacy-building efforts as we journey forward together.

Hello Friends-
Excited to announce our next Book/Bible study beginning in September: "Embracing the Uncertain: A Bible Study for Uncertain Times" by Magrey R. deVega. This is a terrific six-week study which includes a weekly video segment; I am confident you will appreciate Magrey's book, and how scripture speaks to us as we live through uncertain times in our lives.
We will meet Wednesdays at church at 9:30 starting September 16th. Books should be in soon.
