Just finishing up our 5th town this year, been so busy have not taken the time to post some of our conservation efforts. Here is just one of many done in Unity: Lemuel Bartlett, one of the town founders, Revolutionary War Veteran, lawyer and family man, many of his grown children were buried in the family plot. This slate stone had delaminated and split many years ago, it's now whole and standing strong again, check out the last picture for the final results.)

Some stones were in pieces on the ground. Others were buried underground, and lots had been blackened by time.

FYI
Legally, in the State of Maine unless you are related to the person buried at the memorial, headstone or monument, you do not have permissson to do anything to it, no cleaning, scraping, no application of anything.

Getting ready to start in our cemeteries for the season. Have already received two calls about whether is ok to bleach headstones to get rid of growth on headstones.NO..No..no. never ok, do not let anyone bleach your family headstones. The monument here has been damaged and stained by applying bleach..this was before we all knew better. It causes irreversible damage and permanetly ruins the color if the stone.

If you do not have the biological cleaner D2, This is a very brief summary of what to do

rinse the stone with lots of water, wait few minutes, scrape off lichens with plastic credit card and agitate the surface using plastic bristle brushes. Then rinse it all off till the water is clear at the bottom.

The cemetery crew from Canton had these cookies made for us. It doesn't get much better than that... Thank you to 4 ladies and a dude. They are delicious.
