Had he slithered into the garden with a megaphone and neon, flashing lights that you’ll find in Las Vegas, perhaps - just perhaps - she would have seen it coming.
But he didn’t - and she didn’t.
Satan didn’t show up in the Garden that day with an obnoxious invitation for Eve to take and partake from the forbidden fruit. There was no dare, no “Quick, take a bite, just one bite!” He didn’t even ask her if she was hungry.
He simply asked the words, “Did God really say…?”
And from that one question, doubt formed in Eve’s perfectly good heart, causing her to question whether or not God’s Word was reliable.
And what happened in the Garden is still happening to us today.
Satan hardly shows up loud and obnoxious. Instead, he slithers in stealthily as he seeds doubts and whispers lies. Once he’s delivered them both, he pops the popcorn and sits back to watch the show because lies and doubt quickly turn into temptation, and temptation, blatant disobedience.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…” (1 Peter 5:8-9a)
We can resist him and the doubt that he seeds by standing firm in the faith that…
