Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton, IA We live and promote active nonviolence and peacemaking. We are sisters, daughters, aunts and cousins. We are servants of God. The Sisters of St. Francis and St.

We Clinton Franciscans, in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, are called to contemplation and continuous conversion and are sent as instruments of God's peace. We are teachers, we are artists, we are attorneys and mathematicians.We are innovators and advocates...chaplains and social workers. Francis of Clinton, Iowa is a congregation of Catholic sisters -- often referred to as "women religiou

s" -- who have been drawn to the teachings of St. Clare of Assisi. Members of this congregation, like women religious nationwide and in keeping with the Franciscan way of life, serve the people of God wherever and however we are called. The Sisters, along with Sojourners and Associates, direct our energies to peacemaking, service to poor and marginalized persons, and care of the earth all within the context of a life of active nonviolence.

Our venture into active nonviolence and peacemaking began with simple steps. Sister Jan Cebula attended a Faith and Resistance Retreat in May 1989, in Missouri, where both nonviolence and action were emphasized. In the early 1990s, many sisters participated in retreats and actions at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. A greater awareness of injustice and turmoil in the world motivated our sisters to move beyond their traditional ministries.

Our Associate Partnership Program became a reality in 1986, when the first group of lay people made a one-year covenant agreement during a ceremony on October 5. The Associates committed to share the Franciscan values and Gospel lifestyle through prayers, enrichment, and service.

Today, there are 29 Associate partners of the Sisters of St. Francis, radically living gospel values of active nonviolence and peacemaking. Regular gatherings, common prayer, and Franciscan study enrich their commitment to the mission.
