Security, Protection in Christ

Psalm 91 speaks directly of Christ and our protection in Him. “I will say of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God in Whom I trust”, Psalm 91:2. There is no safer place to be than in Christ. There is no stronger refuge, no greater structure that can even come close to Christ our Fortress. “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.” (Verse 4) Jesus Himself, in referring to Jerusalem, said: “How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing”, Luke 13:34. How precious it is that Jesus speaks of His loving kindness as a mother’s instinct to protect her baby chicks. The Psalmist David speaks of his crying out to the Lord for His great love: “Hide me in the shadow of Your wings”, Psalm 17:8. Psalm 91 continually speaks of where our protection lies and that the Lord gives His protection willingly and rescues us as a mother her child. Why is this? Psalm 91:14-15 sums it all up. “Because he loves Me” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My Name. He will call upon Me and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him.” What a precious Psalm. What a precious promise. D. Birr

On Friday the 13th, 2020, we received a recorded phone call from our school superintendent informing us that school would be canceled indefinitely. It marked the beginning of lockdown in the state of Michigan, and everything changed from that point forward. Today marks the six year anniversary of that day, and it also happens to fall again on Friday the 13th.

I made the video linked here more than two years ago as an outlet for some of the frustration I felt during that time. No one at my church has to agree with the conclusions I draw in it, but I do believe the argument presented is thoughtful and worth considering.

I am grateful to be on the other side of that period, and I can say with conviction that I will never lock down again. In my view, it was a mistake. As time passes and we more clearly see the effects it had, particularly on our children, I believe more people will be willing to acknowledge that.

You are welcome to watch the video or not watch it, but please know that a great deal of research went into making it.

Two In Agreement

“Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?” Amos 3:3. In the KJ Version it reads, “Can two walk together except that they be agreed?” Each translation points out that in order to walk with another without friction, the two must be in agreement. So how does this verse highlight our Christian walk? Daily we walk with Christ Jesus and He has given us just what He requires of us to walk in step with Him. Jesus said: “If anyone loves Me he will obey My teaching”, John 14:23. And “Whoever has My commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves Me”, John 14:21. The first requirement for walking in agreement with Christ is to know His teachings and commands and to show Him our love by obeying them. Jesus said that He only did what the Father told Him to do and only said what the Father told Him to say. What an example of walking in agreement. Jesus and the Father are One. To know the Word of God and to follow its truth keeps us in step with our Savior. D. Birr

No Escape

We live in a day where many people are brainwashed by our society. They try to blot out of their minds any reference to the Gospel. But if they do think on their future, two things bring terror to the hearts of those who are wicked, and those two things are: the omnipresence and the immutability of God. God is everywhere and no matter how they try to ignore this, nothing they do escapes His attention. When we say God is immutable, we mean that God never changes. God will never condone sin nor look away from the sins of people. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. To us who know God these facts about Him are comforting, but to the lost, to those who snub their noses at God, they are frightening. How blessed we are to know the faithfulness of our God. To those who run from God, they find no escape route. Even death will never separate them from God’s judgment. “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your Presence?” Psalm 139:17. To deny God, to block one’s mind from the reality of the Presence of God will be futile. How great is the need to spread the Gospel and pray for open hearts to hear and respond to it. D. Birr

How Does God Feel?

We know how we feel. We bombard Heaven with all the unpleasantness our minds are experiencing, but do we ever wonder if God feels? We read the Old Testament and learn of Israel’s unfaithfulness, their direct rejection of God and how they turned away from His Divine love and faithfulness. It is from the Prophet Hosea that we learn about God’s side of this. Hosea experienced the tragedy of a broken home and was sent to speak to the nation of Israel from a heart that was breaking. Hosea knew sadness and pain and heartache at losing his wife who played the harlot. When he spoke God’s words to Israel, Hosea knew exactly how God felt. God loved His people, but like Hosea’s wife, they played the harlot, turning to heathen nations and away from God. Does God feel? Look at Hosea 11:8 and God’s words. “How can I give you up Ephraim? How can I hand you over Israel? My heart is turned within Me.” He is saying, “I can’t give you up, I love you too much. I will not carry out My fierce anger; nor will I turn and devastate you. For I am the Holy One among you and I will not come in wrath”, Hosea 11:8-9. God called them to repent. He would deal with their sin, but when they turn back to Him, He will restore them. Our God feels, for He is moved by compassion and loves us so dearly that He gave His Only Begotten Son to take the punishment for our sins, not giving us what we deserve. D. Birr

The Future Is Now

You are probably saying, “Now is not the future!” Let’s look at it in this way. When you die and draw your last breath and your eyes close never to open again on this earth, you will not remain like that. Immediately you will face your Maker. Will it be “Well done good and faithful servant” or Depart from Me I never knew you?” Will it be a victor’s crown or an eternal separation from God? This makes one think, how am I living my life here and now? As a believer what is my priority? What is my focus? Whose will predominates in my life? Am I living obedient to God’s Word? Do I truly love Him? We will face a Bema Judgment for the things done while in the body; how we have lived our lives here and now. Will we receive rewards, crowns that we can lay at the feet of the One Who sits on the Throne or will we only receive the Crown of Life? Questions to consider daily in our walk, our journey where we are to “Press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God called us heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14) This world and our life will pass. This world is not our home nor is it our source of comfort. We have eternity to enter and we need to consider this seriously. D. Birr

The Stranger Among Us

“The man who enters the gate (of the shepherd) is the shepherd of the sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. After he has brought out all of his own, he goes on ahead of them and his sheep follow him because they know his voice”, John 10:2-4. What a beautiful picture of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus said: “I am the Good Shepherd”, John 10:11. Not only does He know His sheep by name but they know His voice. We are the sheep of His pasture and we must know His voice above all the voices of strangers among us. Then we must closely follow His leading and run away from any stranger’s voice that tries to take us away from the Truth that is only found in Christ. We know Who our Shepherd is; we know who we are; but who is the stranger? There are many voices out there that follow the leading of the enemy of our souls. These are voices of deception; voices that confuse the Truth and manipulate the Word of God to suit their purposes. These voices we as sheep run from because their voices are unrecognizable. These strangers are wolves seeking to attack and lead the sheep astray. We are to only follow the Good Shepherd Who laid down His life for the sheep. How protected we are when we only follow the voice of our Shepherd, “Who leads us daily in paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake”, Psalm 23:3. D. Birr

Intestinal Fortitude

“Whoever acknowledges Me before men, I will acknowledge him before My Father in Heaven”, Matthew 10:32. What exactly is intestinal fortitude? For a Christian it is standing on one’s own two feet and having the purpose to remain firmly on God’s Word, obediently obeying Christ in all the daily events in one’s life. It is often going against the flow of the world’s ways; the world’s thinking and the world’s activities. For a Biblical example we can look at Daniel, who hearing the King’s decree not to pray to one’s God for 30 days, continued to pray to the Lord his God openly. The result, he ended up in a den of lions. He stood for God and God rescued him. To have intestinal fortitude is to remain steadfast in faith and unwavering in one’s stand for Christ no matter what. We are greatly beloved by God and we show our love for Him by our obedience. D. Birr
