Where Do I Turn?

“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path”, Psalm 119:105. Have you ever been in a place where the power suddenly went out and you were left in total darkness? You try to feel your way, yet keep bumping into things. Then you find a little candle that you can light and the darkness becomes not so over-powering. Life sometimes is like that. The path seems so dark and life seems so obscure and confusing. You pray for a light to show you the way, yet the answer seems hidden. At this point God will remind you that He is still God in the darkness and the darkness comes to show us a clear way to Him. God’s power never goes out, never fails, and in our weakest state, “His power is made perfect in us”. We stop looking outside at the darkness and focus on the light that He gives us inside. Suddenly things seem clearer and not so confusing and not so debilitating. With God we now have hope and hope dispels darkness.When there is nothing around us, nothing that we can see or feel that would give us hope, may we realize that it is only in God’s Word and in His promises that we can place our trust and receive hope. Nothing gives God more glory than when we simply believe in Him – our Hope. D. Birr

Stay Satisfied With God

“Who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles”, Psalm 103:5. Our minds are often referred to as spiritual battlegrounds. In other words, our thought realms are war zones. The enemy likes to use our minds as his garbage dump. Well, no more! Dissatisfaction can be overcome. Thoughts of failure can be overcome. Thoughts of anxiety can be overcome and so can frustration. Our will power doesn’t do it. We need something far stronger to enable us to fight fire with fire. What is needed to combat wrong thinking is to stay satisfied with God. It is necessary to pursue God; to know Him better; to take in the Living Water of His Word daily. God’s Word will pe*****te and garrison our minds and take over the attacks of wrong thinking. Our minds will become more settled as we fill ourselves with truth and take in fully the absolute power, ability and knowledge of God. Looking to Him more than our fixation on problems, world events, wants and dislikes, will carry a peace to our minds and an exiting of our anxiety. D. Birr

A Cozy Corner

“In the morning, O Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation”, Psalm 5:3. On a cold winter morning we often find a cozy spot to warm us up before we face the day. When I was a child, I would come downstairs in my fuzzy robe and stand in front of the heat register. It was a hard place to leave. Mornings are a great time to find our cozy spot with God. Time spent with Him in the morning can set the mood for the day ahead. That peace that fellowship brings cannot be found anywhere else. That hot cup of coffee cannot pierce the coldness like the warm, inviting time with our Heavenly Father. Taking time to acknowledge Him, offer a Psalm of praise; or transmit a concern, is like no other time of the day. We must never be in such a hurry with life that we rush past those warm, inviting moments with Him. Quiet places are designed for one purpose, to block out the cares of the day and enjoy the company of the One Who gave us that day and Who knows all that the day ahead will bring. The peace of those quiet moments with our Heavenly Father are priceless, so lets find that cozy corner and see. D. Birr

Don’t Waste Words

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourself”, Philippians 2:3. Words are important. Idle words can cause great harm. James 3:6 says that “The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell”. There are certain things that we as believers must be constantly aware of when we speak. Is what we are saying encouraging another or bringing him down? When we talk to others do they hear words of complaint or do they hear words that edify? Do we put others down to make ourselves look better? Are we continually bearing witness against another or sharing our irritation because things aren’t as we like it? There is a rule of thumb, “If we can’t say anything good, don’t say anything”. It is always best to be aware of the promptings of the Holy Spirit before we open our mouth. Better to be Holy Spirit controlled than having a tongue set on fire by hell. When we speak words without giving thought of their effect, we not only cause hurt but we grieve the Holy Spirit. We must never foolishly waste words. D. Birr
