Dear Friends:
If you are plan to attend decorating veteran graves or Memorial Day, PLEASE bring your own chair.
If you would like to help place flags on veteran graves, please come even if it is to do one section or one hour, every little bit helps to decorate this 60 acre cemetery where over 2,150 veterans have made this cemetery their final resting place. Please join us May 16 & 17 anytime during the day from 9:00a-4:00p to help decorate the veteran graves.
We will be providing snacks and lunch for the volunteers as we do each year as a way of saying "Thank You". We could not do this without your assistance. If large groups are planning on attending, please let me know by Monday, May 11 so we can plan accordingly.
If you would like to financially contribute, we would like to include you as a supporter in our Memorial Day program. Let us know how you would like to be listed and if you have a logo, please email it to us.
With a deep sense of appreciation from the foundation and those buried at Woodland Cemetery. They fought for our freedom through battles and diseases. We will not forget them and their sacrifice to our country and our freedom.

Dear Friends of Woodland Cemetery, we hope everyone is doing well and wanted to inform you the decorating of Veteran graves for Christmas campaign 2026 has begun. We greatly appreciate all those who sponsored wreaths and volunteered. It could not be done without you. Deadline to sponsor wreaths for 2026 hasn't been announced yet and should be the end of November 2026.

Wreaths Across America will be doing a Sponsor a wreath and they will match each wreath sponsored. This will be THROUGH DECEMBER 31, 2025 ONLY. Last year they did this special for one month, and they shortened it this year.

We ran into an issue where some sponsors did not use our group number. Please add our Group ID # OH0145P to all sponsorships. Wreaths Across America will NOT match without a Group ID #.

The Woodland Cemetery Foundation of Cleveland, Ohio is pleased to announce we will be partnering with Wreaths Across America again this year, our Ninth year, to honor those veterans buried in Woodland Cemetery. We are the first cemetery in the City of Cleveland to join this project.

Please go online and sponsor a wreath or submit using the form which is located on our website (wcfcle.org). You can email us for a copy at [email protected]

Woodland Cemetery is home to approximately 2,160 veterans (1,450 from the Civil War) ranging from the War of 1812 to current service. If you have a family relative or a favorite veteran you would like to honor, we will take specific requests to honor that veteran which can be listed on the form.

Please consider sponsoring a wreath or more. On behalf of the veterans buried at Woodland Cemetery and the Woodland Cemetery Foundation, THANK YOU for your support.

The national day to lay wreaths should be Saturday, December 19, 2026. Woodland Cemetery will start at 10:00a. If you would like to assist in laying wreaths on the veteran graves please follow up with us or the WAA for the national day of wreath laying.

Please forward to anyone or any business interested in sponsoring a wreath or more. The more wreaths sponsored, the more our volunteers have to place on veteran graves. Remind them to use the Group ID #.

I had also included our form if you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to Woodland Cemetery Foundation.

Thank you for your continued support as we honor the residents of Woodland Cemetery. We wish you the best with your family and friends this holiday season. Happy Holidays!!

RE: United States Colored Troops & Veteran's Day Ceremony at The Woodland Cemetery

On November 11th, 2025, Veteran's Day, we will be reading the names of Veterans who served during the Civil War and enlisted in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and the United States Navy (USN).

Let me ask a quick question, how many Black Men served in the US Army and Navy during the Civil War? The answer is over 200,000. Before the movie Glory, I remember being told no Black Soldiers participated in the Civil War.

Frank Smith, the Director of the USCT Museum in Washington DC sent me a message asking if we in Cleveland could participate in this Nationwide event. The National Museum in DC will reopen on Vermont Ave. NW, after being closed for an expansion and renovation. They plan on reading all 200,000 names of USCT who served during the Civil War. He asked if we could read the names of the soldiers who were enlisted from Ohio on Veteran's Day.

In Cleveland we will be reading some of those names at the Woodland Cemetery, 6901 Quincy Avenue. Starting at 10 AM with coffee and pastries followed by a short program and reading starting at 11 AM. There are approximately 80 veterans of the USCT buried in Woodland Cemetery.

If you would like to participate and read the names along with other volunteer’s please respond by e-mail to [email protected] and copy [email protected], as soon as possible.

I am also serving this year as the President of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable, we will have a speaker during the November 12th, 2025, meeting; Ret Captain Edward Gantt, U.S. Navy who will be speaking on the history of the USCT and what battles they were involved in during the Civil War. If you would like to attend the Cleveland Civil War Round Table meeting which will be held at the Holiday Inn Rockside Road, Independence OH, on November 12th at 6:00 PM please send me an e-mail by October 31, 2025, indicating if you would like to have dinner. There is a $35 charge for dinner, however to attend the meeting there is no cost, we need to know who will be coming to the meeting so there will be adequate seating.

If you would like to share this information with other people in your orbit please feel free.
With sentiments of warmest regards,
Judge Charles L Patton
