✝️ SAINT WOLFGANG OF REGENSBURG — OCTOBER 31

ENGLISH 🇬🇧

Also on October 31, the Catholic Church commemorates Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg (c. 924–994), Benedictine monk and bishop. Born in Pfullingen, in Swabia, he became a monk and a teacher, and in 972 he was named Bishop of Regensburg, in Bavaria, where he reformed monasteries and schools and personally taught the young Duke Henry, the future Emperor Saint Henry II. Burning with missionary zeal, he longed to evangelize the Hungarians. In his old age he retired as a hermit beside a wild lake in the Austrian Alps: tradition tells that he threw his axe from a mountain, and where it fell, there he built his little church — and that lake bears his name to this day, the Wolfgangsee. He died on October 31, 994, at Pupping, during a pastoral journey. He is the patron of Bavaria and of carpenters, invoked against apoplexy, and is shown as a bishop holding a small church, with his axe. Saint Wolfgang, pray for us!

✝️ SAINT ALPHONSUS RODRIGUEZ — OCTOBER 31

ENGLISH 🇬🇧

On October 31, the Catholic Church commemorates Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez (1533–1617), Spanish Jesuit brother. Born in Segovia, a cloth merchant, he married and had children, but within a few years he lost his wife, his children and his business. In that desolation he resolved to give his life to God, and in 1571, despite his age and his lack of studies, he was admitted to the Society of Jesus as a lay brother. Sent to the College of Montesión in Palma de Mallorca, he served as its porter for nearly forty years. Every time the doorbell rang, he hurried to open it saying, "I'm coming, Lord!" — for in every visitor he received Christ himself. From that humble doorway he became a spiritual guide sought by everyone, from the poorest to the viceroy, and he formed Saint Peter Claver, apostle of the slaves. He died in Palma on October 31, 1617, and was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888. He is the patron of Mallorca and of Jesuit brothers, recognized by his porter's keys and his rosary. Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez, pray for us!

— perché in ogni visitatore accoglieva Cristo stesso.

✝️ SAINT MARCELLUS THE CENTURION — OCTOBER 30

ENGLISH 🇬🇧

On October 30, the Catholic Church commemorates Saint Marcellus the Centurion († 298), Roman soldier and martyr, patron of the city of León, Spain. A centurion of the Seventh Legion, in July of the year 298, during the solemn feast for the emperors' birthday, while all the troops sacrificed to the gods, Marcellus stepped forward, took off his military belt and threw his sword and his centurion's staff at the foot of the standards, proclaiming that he was a Christian and could serve in no army but Christ's. Tried first in León and then in Tangier, before the governor Agricolanus, he confirmed his confession without fear, and on October 30, 298, he was beheaded. His acts of martyrdom, among the most authentic of antiquity, preserve his reason: he could not keep the military oath, for he had to obey Christ alone. He is shown as a Roman centurion with his sword and belt cast at his feet — patron of Christian soldiers and of all who put God before every command of men. Saint Marcellus, pray for us!

✝️ SAINT NARCISSUS OF JERUSALEM — OCTOBER 29

ENGLISH 🇬🇧

On October 29, the Catholic Church commemorates Saint Narcissus of Jerusalem (c. 99 – c. 216), bishop and confessor. Already eighty years old when he was chosen, around the year 180, as the thirtieth bishop of Jerusalem, he governed his flock with the vigor of a young man, defending the purity of the faith, and in 195 he presided over the Council of Caesarea, which decreed that Easter be celebrated always on a Sunday. Eusebius recounts his most famous miracle: one Easter Eve, when the oil for the lamps ran out, Narcissus had water brought from a well, prayed over it and blessed it — and the water turned into oil, filling every lamp of the vigil. Falsely accused by three wicked men who sealed their lie with terrible oaths — that one of them be burned, another struck with leprosy, the third blinded — the saint, instead of defending himself, withdrew into the desert; God himself revealed his innocence, for the curses fell upon the liars. Having forgiven everyone, Narcissus returned to his see at 110 years of age, and died at 116, one of the last men born in the first century. He is recognized as an aged bishop with an oil lamp. Saint Narcissus of Jerusalem, pray for us!
