THE GRAVE CLOTHES DON’T FIT!
Come Up Out the Grave | Part 2
Scripture: John 11:1–44
Today, we walked through the story of Lazarus from sickness and waiting to resurrection and release. The message challenged us to trust Jesus in the delay and stop allowing what belonged to our past to restrict our new life.
1. DELAY DOES NOT MEAN DENIAL
John 11:3–6, 17
Mary and Martha sent for Jesus because their brother was sick. Jesus loved them, yet He remained where He was two more days. When He arrived, Lazarus had been buried four days.
His delay did not mean He hadn’t heard them. His waiting did not cancel His love.
Sometimes we pray for help or direction and feel alone when we don’t recognize an answer. This story reminds us to keep bringing our questions to Jesus. The situation had changed, but His authority had not.
Reflect: Where have I interpreted waiting as rejection?
2. RESURRECTION HOPE HAS A NAME
John 11:23–27
Martha believed Lazarus would rise in the resurrection at the last day. She was looking toward a future event, but Jesus revealed who stood before her:
“I am the resurrection, and the life.”
Her belief in the future resurrection was right. Jesus invited her to recognize that its power and promise rested in Him.
She was waiting on an event, but the Resurrection was standing in front of her!
Reflect: Is my trust rooted in Jesus Himself, even when I don’t understand His timing?
3. WHEN LIFE STOOD BEFORE DEATH, DEATH DID NOT HAVE THE FINAL WORD
John 11:38–44
Four days in the tomb made Lazarus’s condition appear final. But Jesus stood before the grave and called him out.
We applied this truth to the places where we have lost hope: dreams we put away, purpose we stopped pursuing, and possibilities we assumed were gone.
What looks beyond our ability is still within God’s power. We can bring dormant dreams to Him and ask for renewed hope, wisdom, and direction, trusting Him with how restoration unfolds.
Reflect: What have I declared finished that I need to surrender to God again?
4. HIS TEARS REVEALED HIS COMPASSION
John 11:33–36
“Jesus wept.”
Jesus knew He would raise Lazarus, yet He entered the family’s sorrow. Fully God and fully human, He showed both compassion and authority.
We learned that faith and grief can exist together. You can trust God and still cry. Your pain matters to Him.
Reflect: Have I been hiding my hurt instead of bringing it honestly to Jesus?
5. TAKE THE STONE AWAY—AND BELIEVE
John 11:39–41
Jesus instructed the people to remove the stone. Martha raised a concern about the smell, but Jesus reminded her:
“Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?”
The people could not raise Lazarus, but they could move the stone.
We examined barriers such as fear, shame, and hopelessness and the steps we can take through obedience, honest prayer, and receiving help.
Move what He tells you to move, and trust Him with what you cannot.
Reflect: What faithful step can I take this week?
6. COME OUT—THEN LEARN TO WALK FREE
John 11:43–44
Jesus called Lazarus by name. Lazarus came out alive, but his hands and feet were still bound with grave clothes.
Then Jesus said:
“Loose him, and let him go.”
The clothes reflected where Lazarus had been. They no longer belonged to the life he had received.
We challenged ourselves to lay down old labels, shame, and destructive patterns. We also challenged the church to help people grow through prayer, discipleship, accountability, and practical support.
If we celebrate somebody coming out, we must help them learn to walk!
Reflect: What am I still carrying from an old season? Who can help me take my next step toward freedom?
THIS WEEK’S DECLARATION
“My past does not have to define my future. Jesus knows my name, hears my prayers, and meets me with compassion. I will trust Him in the waiting, obey His Word, and receive the help I need to walk in freedom.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, strengthen our faith when the answer seems delayed. Renew hope where disappointment has settled. Help us surrender our pain, our dreams, and our future to You. Show us what we need to lay down and what step we need to take. Teach us to walk in the life You give and to help others do the same. Amen.
