Cheyenne’s schools stayed united because brave women refused to let segregation win!💪🏽🔥

As our children head back to school📚, we pause to honor two women whose courage helped shape the inclusive classrooms they walk into today!

In 1885, when a petition sought to force Black children into a separate school, Lucinda “Lucy” Phillips — a founding member and leading woman of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church — her daughter Susan, and several women in our community stood firm. They wrote to the Cheyenne Daily Sun, which publicly backed them, calling the proposal “foolish,” “uncalled for,” and fit only for the “wast[e] basket.” Their resolve stopped segregation before it could take root.

Decades later, Liz Byrd — daughter of Robert Charles “Buck” Rhone and Sudie Rhone, both active members of the congregation — carried that legacy forward. After being denied a teaching position at Laramie County School District because she was Black, she taught at F.E. Warren for ten years before becoming Wyoming’s first full‑time Black teacher in 1959. She went on to become the first Black woman elected to the Wyoming Legislature and championed the bill establishing the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in our state.

Their bravery laid the foundation for the united, inclusive schools our children benefit from today.
