We gathered yesterday to honor the life of Gidon Shor, and it was a beautiful time to share memories. Here are a few:
Gidon made everyone feel welcome and excited to see his beloved country. It was always a highlight when he blew into or tapped the bus mic to begin each morning singing “Boker, Boker” and end each evening with “Laila, Laila”.
He stepped off the bus once in the Galilee region to direct traffic. Because, of course, everyone knew Gidon, they obliged. Another day, we were heading out of Jerusalem toward Masada. We were told Gidon wouldn’t be making the trip on this particular day. Well, that’s what we thought! The next thing we knew, someone on the side of the road was waving the bus over. You guessed it! Gidon ascends the bus steps, and the group erupts in cheers. And Gidon beams with his sheepish grin.
MORE THAN A GUIDE – HE WAS A SHEPHERD – Gidon would be quick to advise us on which vendors/peddlers to buy from and which ones not to buy from. He could distinguish between genuine and fake. He was always looking out for our best interests. Above all, he desired us to get as much as possible from our journey in the Holy Land. Often evidenced in hurrying us from site to site with the famous words - ‘hurry, the sun is moving… the sun is moving.’
He had an extraordinary way of connecting his deep knowledge of ‘the Book’ to ancient landmarks, Holy Sites. He did so in such a fashion that made the Word come alive. Our lives and our ministry are forever impacted by knowing Gidon.
Thank you, family, for sharing him with us.
