"One day as a young wife and mother of 37 years of age, I was busy with my regular household tasks during a bright June morning [in 1872]. Suddenly, I became so filled with the sense of nearness to the Master that, wondering how one could live without Him, either in joy or pain, these words were ushered into my mind, the thought at once taking full possession of me -- 'I Need Thee Every Hour. . . .'" So said Annie Hawks about the inspiration for the hymn "I Need Thee Every Hour" (number 397 in The United Methodist Hymnal).

πŸ’ What inspires your sense of connection or dependence on God? What reminds you of the nearness of Christ?

What does Juneteenth mean for Christians today?

It’s an opportunity to celebrate freedom, confront injustice, and align our hearts with God’s ongoing work of liberation.

This month, we remember the words of emancipation and are reminded of the
ongoing work to resist injustice and oppression. We pray that more and more of God's vision of freedom and equality for all will be realized. Let us pray together.

Loving and Liberating God,
we remember the freedom promised to all your beloved people.
May your vision of justice, equality and love become an increasing reality.
Help us and strengthen us to join in your work to make it so.
Amen.

🎡 "Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim
till all the world adore his sacred name."

"Lift high the cross" (number 159 in The United Methodist Hymnal) is one of the great processional hymns. During this season, it is often sung at annual conference services--uplifting the gatherings with the song's triumphal tune.

Lyrically, it inspires the church to meet the world with reassurances that God's grace and love are already present. Our job is to follow that love into the world.

πŸ’ Where do you see God's love leading you this week?

As kids, the hikes, outdoor worship, and canoeing were fun but they were also deepening spiritual connections and changing lives, shaping leaders.
