“He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”

LUKE 10:16

PONDER THIS
No man is prepared to serve the Lord until he’s first heard the Lord. One of the marks of all true Christians is that they have heard the Lord. Notice in today’s verse, Jesus put “he who hears” in opposition to those who are false witnesses. Now, what did Jesus say in John 10? Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” The Lord doesn’t know anyone unless they’ve heard His voice. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them.” You cannot be a Christian without hearing the voice of the Lord Jesus Christ. Have you heard His voice?

Have you heard the voice of the Lord?
If yes, how so? If not, how might you seek to hear Him?
PRACTICE THIS
Take time to listen to the voice of the Lord today. Do this through Bible reading or listen to Him through prayer.

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.

--John 15:13

On the last Monday of May, America pauses. Flags fly at half-staff. Wreaths are laid at granite headstones in places like Arlington, Normandy, in small-town cemeteries, and on foreign soil halfway around the world. We call it Memorial Day, and we mean it as a tribute. But how do you adequately honor a man who left his family and never came home? You cannot. But Jesus did, and He calls it the greatest love.

These words from John 15 were spoken in the upper room, on the night before the cross. Jesus was not speaking abstractly. He was describing what He was about to do. He was about to walk out into the darkness of Gethsemane, stand before a kangaroo court, and carry a cross up a hill called Golgotha for people who did not deserve it. He was defining love not as sentiment but as sacrifice. The greatest love is not what you feel. It is what you do. It is the price you are willing to pay.

There is a reason why soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines understand sacrifice in a way that cuts through the noise. When you put on the uniform, you sign a blank check payable to the United States of America, up to and including your life. Most who serve never have that check cashed. But those we remember on Memorial Day did. They gave everything. And for those of us who remain, who enjoy freedom of speech and worship, we owe them a debt that can never be fully repaid. The least we can do is remember.

But here is what Memorial Day must also do for the Christian: it must drive us back to the cross. Because as noble as the soldier's sacrifice is, there is a greater love still. Jesus did not die merely for His friends. He died for His enemies. He died for the ungrateful, the rebellious, the prodigal, and the proud. He died for you. He died for me. The soldier lays down his life so his countrymen might live free. Christ laid down His life so that sinners might live forever.

This Memorial Day, shake the hand of a veteran, fly the flag, and pray for those and the families of those who are ready to show the greatest love. And then, in the quiet, get on your knees and thank God for two altars of sacrifice: the ones marked with white crosses in military cemeteries around the world and the one on a hill outside Jerusalem where the Son of God laid down His life for you. Both deserve your gratitude. One demands your response.

TODAY, REMEMBER THE FALLEN, HONOR THE SACRIFICE, AND NEVER FORGET THE CROSS THAT PURCHASED YOUR ETERNAL FREEDOM.

“So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, ‘Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?’ Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house.”

2 SAMUEL 11:3-4

There are three individuals sitting in the seat where you are right now: the person you are at this moment, the person you could be for God and for good, and the person you could be for evil. Now, many of us do not realize the propensity for evil that’s in our hearts. Many do not realize the depths, the depravity, to which they could go as children of God. You say, “Not me, preacher.” Are you better than David? David is one of the greatest men that ever lived, but David got casual about his walk with the Lord. He just assumed that God was going to keep on giving him victory. He let down his pursuit of the things of God and became idle and lazy. He was casual, then he was careless, and then he was compulsive.

What can we learn from David’s example?
How does God use accounts like David’s to keep His people from the danger of sin?
PRACTICE THIS
Reflect on any areas in which you might have let down your pursuit of the things of God. Take action today to draw nearer to the Lord, confessing anything you need to confess.

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.”

REVELATION 2:5

What is a backslider? A backslider is not an unsaved person. No unsaved person can be a backslider. When Christians use the term backslider we’re not talking about the lost, we’re talking about the saved. You must go somewhere in order to slide back; that is, you must have known the Lord before you can backslide away from Him. A lost person is just lost. The backslider is a saved person who’s out of fellowship with God.

If there was ever a time when you loved the Lord Jesus Christ more than you love Him at this moment; if there was ever a time when He meant more to you, when prayer was sweeter to you, when worship was more real to you, when your service was more effective for the Lord Jesus Christ; if there was ever a time like that when it was more than it is now, you may be backsliding.

What might be some evidence that you are backsliding in your fellowship with Christ?
What are some ways to guard against this each day?
PRACTICE THIS
Spend dedicated time in prayer, asking God to reveal where you might have backslidden and to renew your fellowship with Him.

“It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”

HEBREWS 9:27

PONDER THIS
Is there a chance after death? Absolutely not. There are some people who teach and preach that we have a second chance—after we die—to get right with God. That is false, that is heresy, and I do not want to leave that hope to you. If you want to be saved, you may be saved. If you need to be saved, Christ can save you. And whosoever will is able to come, but I want to tell you with all of the urgency, emergency, function, and unction of my soul, you will not come to the judgment of God and be able to throw yourself on the mercy of the court and say, “God I now believe; have mercy, God. Please save me.” If you want mercy, you may have it. If you want grace, you may have it. If you want forgiveness, you may have it. But you must have it in this life. The Bible says now is the accepted time. Today is the day of salvation. The Bible says it is appointed for man to die once; after this, there is not a second chance, there is judgment.

What is the urgency of today’s verse?
Have you turned to Christ for salvation? If not, how do you need to respond? If so, why should you be compelled to share with others?
PRACTICE THIS
Make a list of people you will pray for regularly to come to know Christ. Pray that these people will not reject the opportunity to know Christ in this life.

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

EPHESIANS 4:30

PONDER THIS
Did you know it is possible for God to give up on a person? Did you know that God will not always send His Holy Spirit to talk to a person? The Bible says in Genesis 6:3 in a solemn warning, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever.” Now God is infinitely patient, but there comes a time when the Holy Spirit can be so insulted, so sinned against, that you cross a deadline and God's gentle, precious Holy Spirit, no longer speaks to your heart. Did you know you cannot be saved unless the Holy Spirit of God draws you to Jesus Christ? Did you know man’s preaching can never save anybody? Did you know that even the truth of the Word of God cannot save you unless the Holy Spirit of God makes that truth real to your heart? Jesus said, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him” (John 6:44). The Spirit of God must draw you to Jesus Christ. But there comes a time when the Holy Spirit of God may be so blasphemed that He will no longer speak to your heart.

What warning do you receive from today’s devotion?
What needs to change in your heart in response to this warning?
PRACTICE THIS
Identify what you need to put aside to better hear the Spirit of God today; take action so that you can hear His voice.
