In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us as his disciples to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow him. None of these actions is easy. To put God’s will before our own, to willingly accept what will make us suffer, and to follow someone who was put to death on the cross, is very difficult. But we will not be alone, for Jesus is with us as we follow him. Also, as he tells us in the Beatitudes, our reward will be great in heaven. Let us realize his real presence as we celebrate and receive the Eucharist.

Today we hear Jesus challenge his disciples. “Who do you say that I am?” he asks them, after asking them what others say. Saint Peter responds at once, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” We are the disciples who Jesus challenges now. How do we answer this question? As we encounter him here today and receive him in the Eucharist, let us think of who Jesus is for us.

In today’s first reading, we hear the LORD tell Isaiah, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” Two and a half millennia later, this house of worship, along with hundreds of thousands of others like it around the world, continues to be a house of prayer for all peoples. In a spirit of Christian hospitality, we welcome everyone who comes here to pray in this holy place. Together we lift our hearts and voices in praise and thanksgiving to our loving and welcoming God.

How often do we cry out to God, wondering if we will be heard? How often do we look in vain for our Lord in the world? Let us take a moment and realize that God is with us right here and now as we worship together. God is with us whenever we celebrate the Mass. God is with us when we receive Christ in the Eucharist. We may not always be aware of it, but God is always near.

Jesus takes us outside again today, to a deserted place where thousands of people followed him. Despite having only five loaves and two fish, Jesus is able to feed the entire crowd. We gather here every Sunday, a crowd perhaps only in the dozens or hundreds, but where we can all be fed, now with Jesus’ own body, offered and multiplied to satisfy us all. We can imagine that we are here with Jesus as he speaks to us and feeds us as he did on that wonderful day, for indeed this is what he does.

On this midsummer day, Jesus invites us to sit back and listen to the master storyteller tell three parables about the kingdom of heaven. Instead of describing it literally, Jesus uses parables to explore its aspects and express its richness. Once again, he speaks of a farmer sowing seed. Let us pray that the seed that is the word of God may find fertile soil in each of us so that we may come to a deeper understanding of our faith.

The setting of today’s Gospel may remind us of a warm midsummer day—maybe like today. Jesus comes outside and walks down to the sea. So many people gather along the shoreline that Jesus decides to go out in a boat and speak to the entire crowd from there. Imagine yourself sitting on a beach on a beautiful day with hundreds of others, listening to the Lord teaching in parables. Through the power of imagination, we have that opportunity today.

Jesus knows that our lives are difficult. The mission he left for us is challenging. Additionally, we have dozens of day-to-day responsibilities and concerns. He’s just told his disciples that they must carry their crosses. But he also promises that he will be with us to carry our crosses when we are overwhelmed. Therefore, he is able to assure everyone who labors and is burdened that he will give them rest. His yoke is easy, and his burden light. Gathered here today, let us put our concerns and anxieties in the Lord’s hands and allow him to lift our burdens from our shoulders.

Jesus and the prophets teach us how to be generous. A woman in the small village of Shunem regularly invites the prophet Elisha to dine at her home when he passes through town. Eventually, she and her husband arrange a room for him to stay in overnight. Elisha responds to her generosity by promising that she will bear her first son within a year. Jesus tells the apostles that anyone who gives just a cup of cold water to a disciple will be rewarded. Even small acts of human generosity reflect the divine generosity of God. May we all be generous in ways great and small.
