“Hope is lived when it comes alive, when we go outside of ourselves and, in joy and pain take part in the lives of others". Moltmann

As the world grows darker with war, fear, and uncertainty, the message of Christian hope is drawing fresh attention. That was the focus of a major event in Seoul marking the 100th anniversary of theologian Jürgen Moltmann, whose “Theology of Hope” called a despairing world to look again to the God of resurrection and new creation.

Speakers at the gathering stressed that Moltmann’s hope was never shallow optimism. It was born through suffering. After enduring the darkness of World War II and life in a prisoner-of-war camp, Moltmann came to believe that Christian faith must speak directly into pain, crisis, and history, not run from it. His message was clear: because of Christ’s resurrection, despair does not have the final word.

That is why his theology is drawing fresh attention again today. In an age of conflict, oppression, climate anxiety, and spiritual exhaustion, many believe the Church does not need less hope, but more — not empty positivity, but resurrection hope rooted in God’s promise. As the world grows darker, Moltmann’s message is reminding believers that Christian hope is not denial of suffering, but confidence that God still brings life out of death.
