What is SHAPING in ABA?

Shaping is a teaching strategy used in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that helps children learn new skills gradually, one small step at a time. Instead of expecting a child to master a skill immediately, therapists reinforce closer and closer attempts toward the desired behavior.
For example, if a child is learning to say “ball,” shaping may look like:
🗣️ “b” → “ba” → “ball”

Each successful attempt is encouraged and reinforced to help build confidence and learning success.

By celebrating progress along the way, children are more motivated to continue learning and growing. Every small step matters!

In ABA therapy, communication goals are individualized to meet each child where they are developmentally. Some children may begin with gestures or picture communication, while others work on expanding vocabulary and conversation skills.

Ways families can encourage language development at home:
Read together daily
Sing songs and nursery rhymes
Narrate play activities
stop to encourage communication opportunities
Reinforce attempts to communicate
Follow your child’s interests during play
