There’s lots of days to show our love for others. Valentines Day is one where we send special greetings and gifts to on another. Today is one of those days where we celebrate our love for our moms. Yet every day is a day we celebrate our love for God!
Love can be complicated. Sometimes our love is part of a love-hate relationship, or at least not like them very much at times.
That is unconditional love. A love that is a BIG ask. Jesus says if you love me you will keep my commandments: to love me with all your hearts, minds and souls, and to love your neighbor as yourself. He demonstrates that love for everyone all the time. It was a monumental task but necessary to create a shift in how others loved everyone in their community.
But as much as he told his disciples he loved them and they were to go forward and share that love, they were still confused about what they were being asked to do. They had doubts and wanted proof. And when Jesus died, they were overwhelmed with grief.
Our task is to share Jesus’s unconditional love with others. It’s not easy to do. We often want to blame ourselves for our failures and times when we want to blame others.
With that same unconditional love, we are asked to love our neighbor as ourself. This is every person: no mater their color, race, or lifestyle. Everyone is our neighbor. Jesus taught us that it is impossible to love God and not our neighbor. We show that love by how we show up. How we speak to others. How we give space to be creative. How we find cures for diseases. How we treat others with equity and ensure their needs are met.
Jesus says they who have my comments and keep them are the ones who love me. Let every day be Valentine Day filled with love like the love of mothers. Amen.
