Just as our bodies cannot survive without water, our souls need God to truly live and flourish. Water washes away dirt and refreshes us, reminding us that through Christ we can be forgiven and made clean. Paul describes Christ cleansing the church “with the washing of water through the word.” The message is that Jesus doesn’t just make us better on the outside—He changes and renews us from the inside, continually reshaping us through His Word and the Holy Spirit.

The Apostle Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1 is a prayer that we desperately need today. He keeps asking the Father to open our spiritual eyes—not simply to give us more information, but to give us wisdom, revelation, and a deeper experiential knowledge of God. He prays that the eyes of our hearts would be flooded with light so that we can truly see what is already ours in Christ. Paul is not praying that God would give believers more; he is praying that they would finally see, understand, and experience what God has already given them in Christ.

Could my fear or suspicion of the Holy Spirit be keeping me from fully knowing who I am in Christ?

“In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13–14 (ESV)

"Who am I now that I am in Christ?" In Christ, we are heirs of God, chosen and included in His purposes, and empowered by His active energy in us rather than by human striving. Our inheritance is ultimately God Himself and eternal participation in His kingdom. When we believe, the Holy Spirit seals us as God's possession, produces His character in us, and becomes God's down payment guaranteeing the inheritance to come. Even when circumstances, people, or spiritual opposition seem to work against us, God is actively working toward His purposes. We can therefore live from our identity, inheritance, and belonging in Christ - not striving to earn what God has already given us by grace.
