“Sitio.” “I thirst.”
Saint Spotlight for September 5: Saint Teresa of Calcutta, Humble Charity. Ora pro Nobis! Each saint's life whispers: Stay strong, stay faithful, stay inspired.
Picture it: Calcutta, 1946, a crowded train rattling toward Darjeeling, heat pressing against the windows, the smell of dust, sweat, and coal smoke. I am Teresa, born Agnes in Albania, a Loreto sister who had taught in a school for years, but on that train Christ spoke to my heart, “I thirst.” He was not asking for water. He was asking for love, for souls, for someone willing to walk into the slums and pick up the people nobody else wanted.
I left the convent in 1948 with a simple sari, five rupees, and a stubborn trust that God does not send a call without also sending the bread. I founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, opened homes for the dying, cared for lepers, gathered abandoned children, and taught my sisters that the poorest of the poor are not a project, they are Christ in disguise. The world gave me a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, but the real work happened in back rooms where nobody clapped, washing wounds, feeding the hungry, and holding the hands of those who had been left to die alone.
I died in Calcutta on September 5, 1997, after years of heart trouble and failing health. My heart stopped in the convent where I had lived and prayed, surrounded by sisters who had learned that love is not a speech, it is a daily habit.
My advice:
Do not wait for a grand mission before you love. Start where you are, with the person nobody notices, the chore nobody wants, the prayer nobody hears. Small things done with great love are how God changes the world, one hidden act at a time.
I’m the Patron Saint of:

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, help me to be more like you in humility, mercy, and faithful love. Amen.
