Mark your calendar! Our annual Ingathering & Water Communion is 3 weeks away. Bring water from a personally significant place — like a vacation spot, the ocean, or your even your home tap — and pour it into our blessings font, which dates back to 1846.

The mingled water will then be sterilized, filtered, and added to all of our previous annual collections, representing how our individual journeys and diverse backgrounds merge into one shared spiritual community. This holy water is used in blessings year round, so that generations past and present bless generations to come.

If you don't remember what we look like, or have never seen us without the shroud of scaffolding, here's a sneak peak!

First Unitarian Brooklyn's Gothic Revival Sanctuary was built in 1842 by noted architect Minard Lafever, in what would become New York's first landmarked neighborhood. We started this restoration project in 2022, and we are on track to remove the scaffolding by the end of 2026.

The Sanctuary is crowned by four ornate spires, originally constructed in soft sandstone, the center two reaching almost 100 feet into the air. Over the years, those spires have slowly worn down, eventually starting to crack and spall. Preservationist architecture firm AYON Studio has expertly guided us before the NYC Landmarks Commission to gain approval to replace these decorative elements with glass fiber reinforced polymer, which is lighter and stronger, while still looking exactly the same as when the spires were originally installed over 180 years ago.

Our fiberglass firm just sent us photos of the GORGEOUS rebuilt finials that will sit atop the spires - check out that drip! (I am assured by my Zoomer child that I am cringe for using that term.)
