A Quick Thought 9/3/26

You're probably familiar with the phrase "We're on a first name basis." Well, I believe that concept is deeper than just going past the formalities of Mr. or Mrs. I think it implies that you know each other pretty well, and you talk often. For example, you're probably on a first name basis with a loved one or a close friend or a co-worker, but you're probably not on a first name basis with the president.

Well, have you ever realized that God is on a first name basis with you? The Bible tells us that He knows you by name. He is familiar with you. He knows everything about you. Your sufferings, your struggles, your sickness, your sadness, your strengths and your sin.

"And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name." -Exodus 33:17 (KJV)

My concern is, am I really on a first name basis with Him? Do I speak to Him often? Do I know Him well? Have I sought Him for help and direction lately? Have I read His Autobiography to know Him better? Have I been to His house much? Honestly, do I know Him at all?

God knows us on a first name basis, but I afraid we don’t God quite that well. We should probably get to know Him better.

A Quick Thought 8/27/26

Apparently, the cold and flu season is already upon us. In fact, folks where I work have already been talking about and preparing how not to catch any of it. Well, I began to wonder to myself, am I contagious? I certainly don't want anybody to catch a cold or the flu from me, but more than that, am I spiritually contagious? When people get close to me, do they catch Jesus? Do I radiate his love and his kindness? Do they find a good witness and testimony or do I give off bitterness, frustration, complaining, and a mean spirit?

I sometimes wonder what people catch when they're around us. Are they catching our Christianity, with symptoms of Christ-likeness, holiness, and forgiveness? Or are they catching our carnality, with symptoms of selfishness, sin, and unforgiveness? I want to be contagious and spread Jesus, not just sick and spread me!

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." -Matthew 5:16 (KJV)

A Quick Thought 8/20/26

I want a lawyer.

The other night, my wife and I were watching one of those cop shows that we enjoy. The episode came to the typical scene of the interrogation in which the accused said they wanted a lawyer. Based on the facts, the accused didn’t need a lawyer because they were innocent, but because they were guilty. That got me to thinking. I don’t need a lawyer when I am innocent, but when I am guilty (of sin), I need a lawyer. Well, praise be to God, I have the best in the business—Jesus Christ. If you are a Child of God, 1 John 2:1 says “we have an advocate (counsel, defense attorney) with the Father.”

When we slip, fall or jump into sin, Jesus is there to represent us and intercede on our behalf before God the Father. Jesus will be just and make sure you get a fair trial. However, there is a condition to our representation; it is our guilty plea. 1 John 1:9 gives us a great promise: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” It is great to know that our sins can be forgiven, but the problem is that we don’t seem very willing to admit that we messed up. The verse preceding and following this promise, warn us of saying that we have no sin…you make God a liar.

In short, we all sin and we all need a lawyer. Admit it to Jesus and let him represent you!
