There's a small archive of local history books about Boalsburg — some put together by the Village Conservancy, some by the Heritage Museum, others from different hands over the years. We've been pulling from them.

This page is from one called The Land Where We Belong.

In 1820, the town was still called Springfield. When the name changed to Boalsburg, it was to honor David Boal, who owned much of the land in the valley and had helped put the town on the map — literally. Boalsburg sat at the crossroads of the stagecoach routes connecting Sunbury to Pittsburgh, north to south across the Seven Mountains. Stages stopped every 25 miles to change horses. Boalsburg was one of those stops.

Three taverns. Three classes of traveler. The gentry stayed at what's now Duffy's. The wagoners had humbler options. The common people had the Wolfe Tavern on the western end of Main Street.

The surrounding area was still mostly wilderness. Boalsburg was already a place.
Zion Lutheran has been here since before any of that sorted itself out. Same valley. Same ridge lines. The names and the roads changed. The church stayed.
