It's a full week!

As we move toward Sunday, we are excited to be welcoming Rachel Pauline Aikens as our guest preacher. Rachel originally connected with University Mennonite through our support and connection with Good News Theological Seminary in Ghana. This summer she has been a visiting scholar at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and we’re fortunate that she is able to travel and be with us in person before she returns to Ghana. She will be present for the service, as well as for sermon conversation during the second hour, and the Fellowship Meal to follow.

Vonda and Doug Yoder are also inviting folks over for ice cream and conversation with Rachel on Saturday evening at their home, starting at 6:30pm. The pool will still be open, so if it suits you, feel free to also hop in the pool for an evening swim!

Please also consider these upcoming events…

Monday, 5-5:30pm at the Allen Street Gates - Lights and Prayers for Peace vigil Standing At The Gates For Justice

Thursday, 5-8pm, 100-300 blocks of Allen Street - Downtown State College annual LION Bash community connecting festival

Saturday, 6-9pm, UMC fellowship hall and sanctuary - a Workshop in Ukrainian Village Singing hosted by Rumble & Scream

It is a full week! Thank you for continuing to help create community and connecting points in a variety of meaningful ways.

On this Labor Day, Pastor Ben reflects on a quote from Wendell Berry while also considering vocation and calling. What are you reflecting on today? Thanks to Mike Bratt for providing the voice for Wendell Berry’s powerful words.

This morning we began a series on Spiritual Disciplines. In the pews were post-it notes and writing utensils; a way to write down our heaviest burdens… Whether they were deeply personal, or broadly societal, whether they felt possibly solvable, or physically impossible, we were invited to write it down on paper. It wasn’t meant as a way to share these prayers with anyone - that wasn’t the point this morning - but in naming it on paper, perhaps an opportunity to be more fully present with God.

As we came forward to the communion table - whether we kept our prayer unfolded, folded it once, or crumbled it into a tight little ball - it was dropped it into a bowl on the table. After our service we went out to the parking lot, where we sparked a flame and lifted up these heaviest and most intimate of our prayers, to watch them be consumed by fire. Fire shows up a lot throughout scripture, often as a powerful symbol of God’s presence and purification. So today we practiced prayer and meditation, with a dash of cleansing fire. 🔥 🍇 🍞 🙏
