SOUND DOCTRINE

At Cornerstone, we do not want to believe or teach anything that Jesus or his apostles didn't believe or teach (i.e. It is of utmost importance to have the right doctrine. What we believe and teach at Cornerstone has been passed down from generation to generation and is consistent with historical creeds and confessions. The elders of Cornerstone believe and teach in accordance with

the London Baptist Confession of 1689 - a wonderful, historic, baptist treatise of Christian doctrine. Feel free to pick up a copy today at the church resource table. Additionally, we have the following fundamental statement of faith that all our members adhere to. SCRIPTURE: We believe the Scriptures of both the Old and New Testaments are inspired by God and inerrant in their original writings (2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:20-21). We believe the Scriptures are the supreme and final authority for matters of faith and practice (John 7:17; 2 Tim 3:16-17; Heb 4:12). GOD: We believe in one God (Deut 6:4), eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matt 28:19), three in one, co-equal, which is the Trinity (2 Cor 13:14). JESUS CHRIST: We believe that Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Trinity, possesses all the divine excellencies, and in these He is coequal, consubstantial, and coeternal (pre-existent) with the Father (John 10:30; 14:9). We believe Jesus Christ was begotten of God, conceived of the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin, Mary (Is 7:14; Matt 1:23, 25; John 3:16). We believe the crucifixion and death of the Lord Jesus Christ was a representative and substitutionary sacrifice and that all who believe in Him are justified on the grounds of His shed blood (Rom 3:24-25; 5:8; 1 Pet 2:24). We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of Jesus Christ (Matt 28:6) and His ascension into heaven (Acts 2:30-31) where He now serves as High Priest and Advocate for all believers (Heb 7:25; 9:24; 1 John 2:1). We believe in the imminent return of Christ the Lord (Acts 1:9, 11; 1 Thess 4:13-18). HOLY SPIRIT: We believe the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment (John 16:7-9). We believe the Holy Spirit indwells each Christian (1 Cor 2:12), empowers them for service (1 Pet 4:10), and is given to each believer as a seal and pledge to their eternal inheritance (Eph 1:13-14). MAN: We believe man was created in the image of God (Gen 1:26). We believe man fell through disobedience (Gen 3:1-24) and as a result, all men, with the exception of Jesus Christ who was both God and man, are sinners by nature, by choice, and by divine declaration (Ps 14:1-3; Jer 17:9; Rom 3:9-18, 23; 5:10-12). SALVATION: We believe that all who trust in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation are born again and thereby become the children of God and heirs of eternal life (John 3:16; Acts 4:12; 16:31). THE CHURCH: We believe that immediately upon conversion, the Holy Spirit places each individual believer into one spiritual Body, the Church (1 Cor 12:12-13). We believe the purpose of the church is to glorify God (Eph 3:21) by building itself up in the faith (Eph 4:13-16), by instruction from the Word (2 Tim 2:2, 15; 3:16-17), by obedience to the Word (John 14:15) by fellowship (Acts 2:47; 1 John 1:3), by keeping the ordinances (Luke 22:19; Acts 2:38-42), and by advancing and communicating the gospel to the entire world (Matt 28:19; Acts 1:8; 2:42). JUDGMENT: We believe in the bodily resurrection of unbelievers, at which time they will be judged and condemned to hell for the just retribution of their sins (Matt 25:31-46).
