All Christians can relate to the celebration of Juneteenth, because our salvation is also a story of gratitude for liberation!

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, celebrates June 19, 1865, the date General Gordon Granger, along with 2,000 Union troops, arrived in Galveston, Texas, and proclaimed freedom for all enslaved individuals per the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln.

But Lincoln made that proclamation two and a half years earlier on January 1, 1863. The slaves in Texas had not yet been aware, and when they received the news of emancipation, the word spread quickly throughout Texas with great celebration. Juneteenth still did not officially end slavery. That did not happen until December 6, 1865, when the 13th Amendment was ratified. However, by the June 19th announcement in Texas, the process was well on the way.

Juneteenth has great cultural importance as the oldest celebration of ending slavery in America and is a reminder of hope, freedom, and restored dignity.

And as Christians, anytime we can celebrate freedom from bo***ge, we should.
