Good morning!
I have to admit I missed it for the biggest part of my life. The message of the greatest commandment somehow went over my head. I'm not saying this as an excuse but as a confession.

There is something about our old nature's sinful tendency to focus on doing, earning or effort to please God rather than sitting and beholding.

Loving God with all our heart, mind and soul, is loving with the totality of ourself and with long attention spans.

Loving God speaks of adoration, worship, desire, sacrifice. Perhaps this is where I missed it. My heart has often been divided.

The word commandment also flew over my head. After all, can love be commanded? “Obey or else”

Here again, I sabotaged myself,
not considering the word “great” in front of
commandment left me short sighted.

It is great in terms of order of its placement. It sits at the “head” of all other commandments. If we get it right all the other commandments fall into place. We get it wrong, we will struggle with the rest.

Loving God with all our heart, mind and soul is the highest of all human experiences. It is the return to the garden of Eden, to the presence of our God. Let us not forfeit this short life on earth by not giving Christ the greatest and best we have, ourself.

I urge you to give time for reflection and meditation on the scripture reading for today Ps.96.

Take a deep breath, turn your eyes toward heaven and let your heart be enraptured by the splendor of God's majesty!
Coram Deo!

Good morning!
“Holiness is nothing else but the habitual and predominant devotion and dedication of soul, and body, and life, and all that we have to God; and esteeming, and loving, and serving, and seeking Him...” Richard Baxter

I love Baxter's definition of holiness. He focuses first and foremost on devotion to God.
Devotion must proceed dedication. The why must proceed the how. Being must proceed doing.

When it comes to holiness we are often very much like the Pharisees; holiness by doing rather than holiness by being.

We forget holiness is a natural by-product of loving God with all our heart, mind and soul.
When we understand who we are, lovers of Jesus, holiness follows.

Eph.5:2-3 gives us a great example of this.
“Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people.”

Sexual immorality, impurity and greed are expressions of unholiness, sin.(v.3)
The motivating factor for NOT committing these sins; a life filled with love exemplified by the sacrificial love of Christ.(v.2)

Just as love is the motivating factor for keeping God's commands. Love is the motivating factor for holiness. What lover will want to do anything to hurt their lover? A lover doesn't focus on breaking commandants and neither do they focus on keeping commandments. Their focus is on their lover. The implication is we become holy by becoming lovers!

Holiness thus becomes an expression of love and a way of life for those walking Coram Deo.

More tomorrow, until then Coram Deo!

Good morning!
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3

Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.1 John 3:18
“...but in deed and in truth.”

For people who truly love they know that words are not enough. From buying flowers to baking cookies, from going the extra mile to sitting by a bed side. True love expresses itself in tangible ways. Love is hands on.

One of the most profound tangible ways we can express our love for God is keeping His commands.

This was Jesus's point in John 14:5 - “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

Let me stop here, I almost missed this. “you will keep” IS NOT God forcing us to keep His commandments but rather “you will” is an expression of the overflow of our love in action. “If” here is conditional. It follows that for those who truly love the Lord they will want to keep His
commandments.

“His commands are not burdensome because keeping His commands is an expression of my love.”

When I was very young I watched a elderly man tenderly caring for his wife who was very frail. At the time his tenderness escaped me. She had nothing to give but her immobility. She was a burden to say the least… but not to him.

Years later and being married for 38 years I now get it: Love removes the burden.

More tomorrow, until then Coram Deo!

Good Morning
Have you ever asked yourself why you love someone?
What drew you to them?
Was it their kindness? Compassion? Personality? Warmth? The reasons are perhaps many.

As we have observed, love is the “thread” that ties us to holiness and it is essential we understand how important this thread is.

It's one thing to practice certain habits to “make yourself holy” and quite another to practice certain habits “because you are holy.” (note the difference)

Without love holiness becomes an effort, a work and can lead into legalism. Your relationship becomes nothing more than a list of do's and don'ts draining its life.

As strange as it may sound when we get the “why” right, “the how” will take care of itself.

So we circle back to one of the most important questions we will ever ask ourselves concerning holiness. Why do we love Him? The why of the why.

For the apostle John the answer was simple.
“We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19

John was speaking of a love packed full of meaning which was verified on the cross.

If you asked me when I was dating my future wife why I loved her, I would have told you I love her because she's beautiful, her personality etc.
Today I would add to that and say I love her because she deeply loves and cares for me.
This is love on a whole different level.

That illustration only touches the tip of the iceberg of Christ's deep compassionate love for us as revealed on the cross.

How could you not love Someone who loved you like that!

Until tomorrow, Coram Deo!

Good morning!
Why did you accept Christ as Savior?

When I was young the emphasis of many revival sermons was on hell. If I am truly honest the main motive for why I came to Christ was to escape hell.

Later the emphasis shifted to what I call the “God has a plan for your life.” (Jer.29:11)
“Get saved and be blessed!”

Later the emphasis shifted again this time to forgiveness; “You are forgiven!”

While all these are true…to a point.
The downside of these emphases is they give the impression of Christ as being nothing more than the gatekeeper to heaven, blessing and forgiveness. And once one is “in” who needs the gatekeeper.

Perhaps I’ve overstated a bit; but not by much. For me and many others Jesus was nothing more than a means to an end.

It was sometime before I finally realized that salvation was more than escaping hell, being blessed and yes more than being forgiven.

One of the great themes of salvation is restoration.

Restored to Christ's presence
Restored to His image
Restored to loving God with all our heart, mind and soul

And yes love is the motivating factor to drawing near to Christ.

In the process Christ does save us from hell. He does bless us. And a MIGHTY YES we are forgiven!

Like the l***r in Lk.17, the one who truly loves never leaves Christ at the gate. As my wife has said, “If you love someone you want to be near them.”

More tomorrow as we look at the “why” of the why. Until then, Coram Deo!

Good morning!
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you… James 4:8

I was praying for the Lord to change me. He said “I can only change you when you are near me.” Kameron Worley.
That's powerful

We cannot be changed from a distance. That's why the coach says, “Huddle up!”

But the truth is deeper than that; we cannot even change ourselves. If we could we would not have needed a Savior.

Last night I was reading 1 Thess 5:23-25 and I was struck by the opening words
“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely…”

Do you see it?

“May God Himself make you completely holy…” (sanctify: make holy.) I love it!

God takes it upon Himself to make us holy!
I wonder if we don't sometimes over complicate things.
I got to quit this or that
I have to give up this
I need to do better
We act that it is all up to us to make ourselves holy.

Read James 4 and 1 Thess.5 side by side
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you…
May God Himself make you completely holy…
(Pause for a moment, reflect)
What's our part? Draw near
What's God's part? Make us holy

Here is the question I want you to think upon this weekend:
Not “how” but “why”
Why would you want to draw near to Christ?
What are your reasons?
Next week we will come back and examine this pivotal question.
Until then, Coram Deo!

Good morning!
Almost a year ago I was praying that I wanted more of Christ in my life.
The Spirit brought two words before me: “No Compromise.”
I knew immediately what the Spirit was telling me; if
I wanted a closer walk with Jesus, I could not compromise with any sin in my life.

Since that day those two words have taken up residence in my life. From the things I see, hear, read, watch, say, to how I respond. Thoughts, attitude, motives, desires are all subject to no compromise.

At the beginning holiness did not figure into my thought process. I thought if one prayed they wanted more of Christ it would just happen.

I now see “more” comes through growing in holiness.
More of Christ and holiness are one and the same.

To want more of Christ is to be more like Christ.
Coram Deo is “living holy” in the presence of Christ's holiness.

Along the way I have learned something very valuable: to grow in holiness one must grow in love for Christ.

Love as seen in John who leaned on the breast of Jesus.
Love as seen in Mary who sat at the feet of Jesus.
Love as seen in the woman who washed Jesus's feet with her tears.

“Learn much of the Lord Jesus. For every look at yourself, take ten looks at Christ. He is altogether lovely. Such infinite majesty, and yet such meekness and grace, and all for sinners, even the chief! Live much in the smiles of God. Bask in his beams.”Robert Murray M’Cheyne
