Happy 70th Anniversary Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau!
August 24, 1956
"My appointment by Our Holy Father Pope Pius XII as Bishop of the new Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau makes me a sharer in his solicitude to bring Christ’s message of peace, goodwill, and eternal happiness to my fellow Missourians. The new assignment would be a frightening burden were it not for the realization that in addition to God’s help, Archbishop Edwin Vincent O’Hara, at Our Holy Father’s bidding, is handing over to my care a choice portion of his vast Diocese (of Kansas City) together with some of his best priests, religious, and laity. In addition, I know the wonderful men and women among our non-Catholic friends who will welcome our poor efforts and cooperate with us in working for the common good—in time and eternity—of our fellow citizens in the exquisitely beautiful Ozarks area of our state."
"For me, the appointment as Bishop of the new diocese binds me more closely to the priests, religious, and laity of an area where I have served happily for the past seven years. With God’s help, I know that the heavy tasks of the future will be fruitful not only for the Catholics, but for the non-Catholics, many of whom I have met and whose goodwill and cooperation I value.
"I am grateful to Archbishop Joseph Ritter, who relinquishes to me such a wonderful segment of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. After God’s grace, I rely confidently on the prayers, loyalty, and cooperation of my brother priests, our self-sacrificing religious, and wonderfully apostolic laity."
