New City Catechism Question 38: What is prayer?
Prayer is pouring out our hearts to God in praise, petition, confession of sin, and thanksgiving.

Day One Evening: Pouring out our hearts in praise.
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. (Colossians 1:15-20)

Meditation:
Use the verses above as material for worship. Turn the whole thing into a prayer. Use your body, your voice, and your spirit.

Questions for Discussion:
What role does your body play in praising God? Is it important to you to use your body? How do we see believers using their bodies while worshiping in the Bible?

Parents and Kids:
In the Bible we see people kneeling before God, bowing before God, and standing with arms raised. Practice praying with your kids in each of these postures. Be sure to pour out your heart in praise!

Question 38 New City Catechism: What is prayer?
Prayer is pouring out our hearts to God in praise, petition, confession of sin, and thanksgiving.

Day One Morning: Pouring out our hearts in praise.
The dark side of the self-improvement movement is self-absorption. The information age is an amazing blessing - you can learn how to do anything. Sadly, you can also get stuck on yourself and spiral into hopelessness comparing yourself to others. Buyer beware: self-absorbed people are unhappy. The self is too small, too unstable, too fickle, and too opaque to depend on.

The perfect antidote to self-absorption is praise.

God has everything under control, He has an abundance of glorious qualities, He wants to bring us joy, and He wants us to have the eternal joy of a family relationship with him. In the following prayer, Jesus intercedes for us, asking that we would see his glory. Let’s join him in this longing. Let’s improve our capacity for praise.

Meditation:
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” John 17:20-24

Practice of Praise:
“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:6

Get away privately to praise God and see what happens!

Questions for Discussion:
How does involving music affect the way you praise God? Let’s compare and contrast.
What role does praise play in good mental health?
This question and answer states that we should pour out our hearts in praise. How do you stir up your heart to praise when it seems hard?

Parents and Kids:
Ask your kids, “What’s great about God?” and see what they say. Come up with some great reasons to praise God then join together in doing it
