Question 38 New City Catechism: What is prayer?
Prayer is pouring out our hearts to God in praise, petition, confession of sin, and thanksgiving.
Day One Morning: Pouring out our hearts in praise.
The dark side of the self-improvement movement is self-absorption. The information age is an amazing blessing - you can learn how to do anything. Sadly, you can also get stuck on yourself and spiral into hopelessness comparing yourself to others. Buyer beware: self-absorbed people are unhappy. The self is too small, too unstable, too fickle, and too opaque to depend on.
The perfect antidote to self-absorption is praise.
God has everything under control, He has an abundance of glorious qualities, He wants to bring us joy, and He wants us to have the eternal joy of a family relationship with him. In the following prayer, Jesus intercedes for us, asking that we would see his glory. Let’s join him in this longing. Let’s improve our capacity for praise.
Meditation:
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” John 17:20-24
Practice of Praise:
“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:6
